“Most helpful staff ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

La Maison del Solar is a basic, clean and affordable hotel in a very central location of Arequipa. We read about the noise complaints here on Tripadvisor and asked for a quiet room in our booking request. We promptly received an email that we would be able to chose from a number of different rooms to see which was the most convenient for us. One of the rooms offered would have been very quiet indeed - because it didnt have a window. :-) We opted for a room on the third floor next to a little terrace with nice-ish views. Yes, we could hear cars, but it wasnt that bad. We slept fine!

The room was ok sized with a small but clean bathroom, nice sheets and we were offered the usual Peruvian budget breakfast: rolls, marmelade, tea, coffee, fresh fruit juice. For the price of 35$ for the double room with private bathroom there's absolutely nothing to complain about.

Staff were exceptionally friendly throughout our 3 days stay. Room service even folded our clothes that we had dumped carelessly on the floor! Reception also minded our bagpacks on the last day and when we came in to change clothes we were offered a room with bathroom to change and get dressed for our overnight bus trip. Highly recommendable!

“Disappointingly different from most reviews here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

During our four week trip in Peru, this is the only property that we found disappointing. Based on the reviews we had read here, we expected a much different place. If we had known what to really expect, perhaps we wouldn’t have been so disappointed (or we might have booked elsewhere). In retrospect, we find that many of the previous reviews don't give an accurate impression, and we were left wondering if they were even talking about the same hotel where we stayed.

* The hotel is only a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas. Unfortunately, it faces one of the main roads into the Plaza and downtown areas, so the rooms are very loud. The hotel and facing building (it looks like an abandoned warehouse with broken windows everywhere) create a canyon, which only amplifies the constant honking of horns and whistling of traffic control officers. The traffic slows down only briefly in the wee hours of the morning, despite management’s reassurances to the contrary. We checked a few different rooms, but none of them seemed quiet. Even in windowless rooms you could feel the vibrations and muffled sounds from the traffic outside. On the one hand, this isn't the hotel's fault - there's really not much that they can do to reduce the noise. On the other hand, it is a fact about this hotel: if road noise bothers you, you won't be comfortable here. Even earplugs didn’t block much of the noise out.

* The rooms we were shown (four in all) were small, dingy, with stained walls and carpets. A new coat of paint and new carpets would do wonders in this respect.

* The staff were very helpful and nice, no complaints there.

* The breakfast was the most basic we had in four weeks in Peru - rolls, butter and jam with a cup of tea or coffee and a juice. Not even ham and cheese.

* Hot water was plentiful and our bathroom appeared to be clean.

* The free Wi-Fi doesn't work well on the upper levels. It seemed to work fine lower down and the hotel provides one machine for guests to share.

We're calling the hotel "disappointing" because we had higher expectations based on the glowing reviews we read here. It's the only place where we stayed in Peru where our actual experience and the impressions we had gathered from these reviews seemed so far apart. If you know what to expect and aren’t bothered by very loud street noise, then this place is nothing special, but it’s okay. However, it bears restating that if you don't have a very high tolerance for road noise, you won't sleep well here. We were relieved when we left. The rooms are cheap, but we would have happily paid a bit more for a quieter place. We won’t return.

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel. If you must stay here, try to get a room on a lower floor and as far from the...

As this person says we are a cheap hotel with some good basic services. There are persons who pay for silver but ask for gold. The n ature of our hotel is to give a good service for a best value price. We are one of the cheapest places of hotles similar to us. We are directed to people who travel on a budget and try to give the best we can.

About noise, December is a very busy month and the city centre of Arequipa is very noisy. We cannot fight against all people in Peru who horns the honks, h ere in Peru thsi is allowed by authorities.

We are putting double windows to make minimum the noise.

About basic breakfast, you should take into consideration that we give free continental breakfast that consists of fresh fruti juice, milk, tea or coffe, two breads and butter and jam. This is good enough for the prices you would pay for the room that also includes internet and wi fi and cable TV. You can compare and will see that all hotels ar emor eexpensive than us.

We are an economic hotel with good service. If you want more services, you can pay for hotels of 5 stars that will give you a lot of sercies for a lot higher prices.

“Friendly and comfortable value hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It is a no frills place perfectly located to walk around arequipa's city center. The owner/operator was very nice and helped us find and map vegetarian restaurants in the city. We used their airport pick up service and were surprised to find out the owner herself did the driving. Small, simple hotel and as good as I could possibly expect for my tight budget.

“close to plaza de armas, no frills”

the hotel is very close to the plaza de armas. we had a room facing the street, which generated a lot of traffic noise. the breakfast is bread and crap coffee. the rooms were dirty and i don't think they have a maid service as our room was never picked up. the internet was spotty. not sure why this place has such good reviews. it is a basic hotel in a good location. get what you pay for.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the street.

The traffic noise is llready handled, we are putting double windoos to avoid traffic noise that is coomon in Peru. We cannot do anythign to honk honrning because here are no laws to forbid hrn honking.

continental breakfast includes fresh fruit juicy (either paw paw with orange or pineapple juicy) milk, coffe or tea, butter, jam and breads. We are sorry to hear that for you our coffe is crap, because we serve sealed envelopes of Altomayo coffe, a well known Peruvian coffe brand. First time we have this complain about coffee. We will send this complain to Atomayo coffee company, a really serious company in Peru with one of the bests coffees in our country.

About the maid service, we are going to take note of your review. Maid service was changed, maybe former maid was not happy with us and therefore was not doing the job, but we have new maid service. We are sorry about this.

About spotty internet. this is not our fault. It is a shame but Telefonica, the only company in Arequipa which provides internet service is nto good. We made a lot of complains, we even appeal to superior government instances but Telefonica does not provide good service. We try to pay for the best internet service and they do not give us back a good service. Maybe with this review we will support our complains better with the governemnt institutions to get better service from this company.

We have good reviews because fo the type of tourists we are directed. we are directed to tourists who travel on a budget but want great service, good location, comfort, clean rooms. We are not a five stars hotel but we also do not have prices of a fice stars hotel. We have very competitive prices compared to the establishments similar to our establishment.
