The old town of Cuenca is one of the few places where you can go out (safely) at night. The Carvallo is in a restored mansion with rooms surrounding a roofed courtyard. Beautiful art and antiques complement the space. Rooms are quiet and the beds are comfortable. Service was very good. Nearby are excellent shopping, including a handicrafts market, good restaurants, amazing churches and cathedrals, and gelato/ice cream shops almost on every corner. Make sure you visit the Panama Hat factory.

I came on a research trip and stayed 3 nights. This is an old Spanish Colonial building that has a lot of character, has an interesting layout and the rooms were comfortable and well appointed. It is in a great location near the old center of town and within easy walking distance to the rivers. Staff was outstanding and attentive.

There were a few minor things - floors are old, wood and very creeky so the rooms can be a bit noisy at times. Breakfast was limited although the staff tried to help you as much as they could.

Over all it was a good choice for me.

The hotel public areas and rooms use Spanish colonial style, and the room was spacious. The hotel was 2 or 3 blocks from the main square, and the neighborhood had shops but was quiet at night. Breakfast was great, including choice of eggs.

This is a very nicely redone boutique hotel right in downtown Cuenca. Great character, incredible service, good free breakfasts but one large issue.

Concrete walls in an atrium format with creaking wooden floors on each level = you can hear everything from the kids running up and down the hall, people at breakfast etc.

Bottomline, if you are used to that level of noise etc. this is a great place with great people. If you value your sleep - probably better off looking somewhere else.
