“Beautiful Homebase for Visiting This Extraordinary City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Stayed here for 4 nights while visiting Cuenca and the southern Andean highlands. Cannot recommend it highly enough as a good value, atmospheric, place to stay.
It is in a perfect location for walking the central district, on a quiet one-way street, and is decorated in an attractive historical way. The central enclosed courtyard is the restaurant, also beautifully decorated, and there is also a good breakfast room and a bar at street level in the front of the building. The staff were extremely helpful; front desk staff spoke very good English; staff attended to every request (fan, extra pillow, new lightbulb) immediately. Our room was on the top floor, two stairway flights up - **there is no elevator** - so be aware of this if it is a restriction for you. Cuenca elevation is also over 9,000 feet, also to be taken into account. The room was very large, but not especially well furnished. It had 2 double beds, a tiny desk, and an old lounge chair. The lighting was quite dim. The bathroom was very well lit, had a new sink, and the shower was OK (the original glass door was gone and replaced with a shower curtain). It was completely clean with plenty of towels and supplies. As a base of operations for touring, this hotel was just perfect for us.

Room Tip: Get a first floor room if the altitude (over 9000 ft) or climbing stairs is a problem. Top floor ro...

Dear Guest

We are glad that you enjoy your stay, the reason that the room had a shower curtain is that we were remodeling the bathroom, in addition we have also improved the lighting. I promise you on your next stay you will feel a difference. We hope your next visit you will stay with us.

Best regards;

“Very Nice Hotel with Great Location”

We stayed 3 nights right after Christmas. The hotel was still beautifully decorated and I'm sure is lovely even after the decorations are taken down, with an enclosed center courtyard with a tree and lots of beautiful wood paneling. Even more lovely however are the staff, who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Their advice and knowledge of Cuenca was first rate. The hotel is located just a block from the Parque Central in the Old City part of Cuenca and it made an ideal base for exploring the city. We were in one of the 3rd floor rooms. As might be expected in a city, there were a couple nights where the outside noise could be heard a little later than I might have wanted. The beds were very large and comfortable, with plenty of pillows. The hotel also had free wireless internet. There were only two drawbacks: the lighting was very dim in the room (including the table lamps) -- so bring a headlamp, e-reader, or flashlight if you want to read -- and our shower, while very modern, supplied only lukewarm water. The coffee at breakfast was very good, and thankfully not Nescafe like you encounter elsewhere in Ecuador.

Room Tip: There is no elevator so avoid the 3rd floor rooms if you cannot handle stairs, though I understand t...

“Beautiful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

My wife and I stayed here 12/29. We arrived late and they did not have our reservation. I had called earlier in the day but no email or confirmation. We got their last room - second floor on the courtyard which might explain how noisy the room was. The courtyard was noisy until about 10pm so be prepared if you turn in early. Our room was tiny but clean. As the pictures show, the furnishings and hotel are elegant. We ate dinner at the atrium restaurant - salad was very good but did not enjoy the beef. Breakfast buffet in the smaller restaurant was quite good.

The service was excellent and the desk staff spoke good English. They booked a tour for us with a very good guide we used for two days.

We would only stay here again if we were able to get a quieter room.

Room Tip: Get a quiet room away from the courtyard

“Fantastic Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Let me start by saying the service is top from arrival to departure, always a "buenos" from all the staff and very accommodating! The hotel itself is beautiful and the dining area in the center of the lobby with a real tree hanging over is beautiful, the food there however is nothing to write home about. My only caveat on the hotel was noise which I didn't expect from an old building, usually the walls are pretty solid. My room was on the third floor next to what I believe was a concierge desk so on a rainy afternoon when I decide to take a siesta her phone calls were annoying. Also first thing in the morning I could hear housekeeping opening up all the linen cabinets in the hall by my room and worst of all could hear toilet adventures from the room next door. All in all I'd return but I'll be sure to take ear plugs :)

Room Tip: Ask if the second floor is quieter

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments, we deleted the phone from the desk on the third floor in order to give the guests comfortable rest. Due to the age of the house can always be some noise because the walls are not concrete. We look forward to your presence in our hotel on your next visit.

“Very charming hotel.”

We were pleased with the style, location, courtesy of the staff and the food. The two suggestions we have are increase the lighting in the rooms and train a bartender to fix drinks properly. There is some confusion about the happy hour deal, but that just needs a new sign explaining what is, or is not, on the deal.
