“Not a true Oro Verde”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2007

We decided to stay at this hotel due a friend's recommendation. Oro Verde hotels are considered the best in Ecuador. But there is always an exception. The pictures you see of the hotel with the beautiful lake is no longer there. The water has been drained to make space for a parking lot and meeting rooms. Construction just began and can't imagine living there when construction fully starts. This hotel is one of the most expensive hotels in Cuenca, but the rooms are just not up to the standards. The room was small and the bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen. There wasn't any space to place your personal toiletries. The shower door was broken which resulted in a flooded bathroom floor. My cable box was broken during my entire stay. They told me the cable operator doesn't work on weekends. (They knew of this problem before I got there since the cable box was missing when I checked in). A simple solution would have been to take a cable box from another room. But I guess that was too technical for them to do. The carpet, like the other reviewer said, nasty. These are just a few of the problems I had during my stay. Truly disappointed.

Dear Guest,

We are really sorry you didn't appreciate your stay in our hotel. I am the New General Manager of Oro Verde Cuenca and really your opinion is very valuable in order to help us improve our installations and/or services.

You must know that Cuenca, being Historical Patrimony of humanity by UNESCO, ha a lot of urbanization restriction in every construction changes you want to do to a property. However we are doing everything possible to improve the inside of the hotel right now. The little lagoon has been dried of by the municipality, so the ownership whom at that time didn't have much of a choice had to react so they process in creating new green spaces, kids playground for families, another convention room with a total capicity of 600 pers. and yes more parking lot.

Since 80% of our clients are locals, parking spaces were a vital issue for our operations.

“Avoid to stay at this hotel !!!!!!!!”

This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at in my life. The hotel rugs are stained and dirty, additional to the unpleasant odor. I was assigned to one of their best suites, where you could listen to everything happening in the neighboring rooms. The lake portrayed in the photographs provided by the hotel is dried down, so there is no lake but a mosquito nursery. But the most incredible thing: NO HOT WATER, in a city located at more than 7000 feet above sea level, close to the snow caped mountains of the Andes. When I approached the manager to ask for the reason of not having hot water, he went, like most equatorians do, to say that he could not do anything about it, without even lifting a finger to help me. Breakfast was included in the rate, but when you go to the restaurant, everything is cold or non-existent, not to mention the terrible service. They stole from me $110 dollars a night, for two nights, since there were no rooms available in other hotels, as a result of the activities related to the conmemoration of the founding of the city. If you visit Cuenca, a wonderful city, book another hotel, recommending the Santa Lucia, which is run by a relative of the owners of the best restaurant in the city, Villa Rosa.

We recently stayed at the Oroverde Hotel in Cuenca for 6 nights. The service was excellent, the breakfast very good. We were with our 19 months old baby. If you ever go to Cuenca I recommend this hotel. The staff made us feel special and they were very helpful.

“Nice staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2006

We stayed 7 nights at the Oro Verde in Cuenca while attending our son's wedding. I had reserved a suite on the Oro Verde's web page. Seperated bedroom with 2 TV's, sitting area with sofa and chair, mini bar, diningroom table. Large bathroom 2 sinks, jacuzzie tub and shower, candels and robes. When we checked in it was not the room I reserved. (We ended up paying $160 a night istead of the $95. I think they're webb page is a little misleading. We talked with Pauline who helped us speak with the manager about the web page mix up.) We wanted a large room with a sitting area so we could visit with family that was in town for the wedding.
The resturant was very nice, great buffet for breakfast and lunches. Piano player at dinner time. The grounds were well kept and clean. Llamas on the otherside of the river, ducks, and a swingset for children. Small pool, we did not use it as it rained everyday and was cool outside. The lagoon was drained somewhat as they were fixing the water intake. Ask for a room away from the street, you want to be on the lagoon side. We had no problem with street noise. We had a private fax machine in our room and incoming faxes are free. Bussiness center had problems getting internet connections at times but OK. 2 computers for guest to use.
The staff was very helpful helping us arrainge for a tour of Ingapirca Ruins. It cost us $60 for a driver to take us there, about 1 1/2 hour drive. I would stay there again. It has everything you need.
