“Cold building, cold water, cold matron/owner”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

This place is cold. No hot water in most rooms. The greeting area/office is littered with bicycles and other items that should have been in storage. My partner had the shower head fall off and hit him in the head. Two days later the shower was fixed. We could have used the room next door for a shower but that had no hot water as well. The matron/owner is cheap and very bossy. I can not recommend this hostal. In fact I moved before my time was up, forfeiting the extra day. Breakfast is simple but the girl server, Irene is very nice. This place needs some TLC and a better attitude from the owner. Lights are turned off at nine pm in the common room even if you're sitting there on a computer. There are many hostals in Cuenca not listed by Trip Advisor or Hostal World my advice would be to seek out another source for hostals.

Room Tip: Find a different hostal!!

“Cosy and clean hostel in the centre of Cuenca”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

This hostel is very clean and cosy. It is located in the city centre, in the walking distance from everything. It is an old building, but the bathrooms are renovated and decorated as modern style. The rooms are personally decorated, each room is different. The doughter (Samantha Ordoñez) is an artist and her ateljee is upstairs. The breakfast is included in the price (that is reasonable) and the guests can cook other meals in the kitchen (there are micro wave, stove and fridge in the kitchen.) This hostel is excellent choice for families or those who wish to stay longer in Cuenca. (If you stay longer than 10 nights, you will get discount.) Samantha, Irene and their mother are very friendly and helpfull and will answer all the questions you might have. I spent 8 nights in this hostel and I really enjoyed staying there.

“Terrible, terrible and terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

Saw this place reviewed in an old edition of Lonely Planet, so I thought I'd give it a go while I was in Cuenca. The location seemed okay, near the plaza de armas and a few decent restaurants nearby. Big mistake. It is dirty, there is broken furniture and missing light bulbs in the rooms, the ceiling leaks, there is no bathroom door. Yuck. It's also not particularly cheap. Perhaps because Lonely Planet reviewed it, there's a stready stream of guests that don't know what the going rate is in Cuenca for a place like this. If it wasn't so rainy in Cuenca, I'd consider sleeping in the street rather than this place.

Room Tip: Ask if you can sleep outside. It's got to be cleaner than the rooms.

“Lots of character with great value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

Arrived later in the night, greeted by the owner, very warm, friendly and showed me the layout of the building. It's older but had a cozy, minimalist well designed feel! Nice courtyards with small but functional kitchen to use, just add your own food. Bedding was clean, warm. Rooms have a unique feel, not cookie cutter. Since owner lives here it does have a personal feel to it. If you want character and a great value for your buck, def check out Casa Naranja!

“Not a good place to be ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2011

The worst hotel we had during our trip.
Notice: during our three night stay we were the only guests.
The whole hotel was very cold. Outside it was much nice.
The rooms had just the basic furniture and were pretty smale. The matraze was so hard that all of us and back problems on the next day. You were not really able o lock your room. We got a smale lock which wasn't very secure.
There was no breakfast served even though it was offered. There was only room service after we asked for it. BUT the women only made the beds. No cleaning of the facilities.
You better know some spanish when staying here. Noboday was able to speak english.
The wireless internet didn't work and nobody cared.
The best thing about the hotel was the location. It is located in the heart of the old town.
I can not recommand this hotel.
