We had arrived by bus in Cuenca at 8pm and were approached by a representative of Posada Todos Santos who offered us a double room with private bathroom in the guesthouse for US$10 per person (low season price). We were initially wary of taking his recommendation. But upon seeing the guesthouse listed in the Footprint Ecuador guide (a real, nicely printed one with glossy pages) in his hand, we agreed to proceed to the place. He offered us a ride in his car but we preferred to take down the address of the guesthouse from the Footprint guide, and make our own way by taxi instead (US$2. Usually US$1.50 but the fare is higher for night rides.)
We immediately loved what we saw: beautifully maintained interiors with handpainted murals and plants, a well-lit sheltered courtyard, and 6 very clean and spacious rooms with 2 large beds in each room. The showers were the BEST we ever had - super powerful with immediate hot water on demand. The bathrooms were incredibly clean and of a good size. Good strong flush for the toilets. Good quality towels, toilet paper and soap provided. For the first time in S.America, bathing was a pleasure - we didn't want to get out of the shower.
The guesthouse is not large, so the WiFi connection worked well in the shared area and in the rooms, at a decent speed. Breakfast is US$1.50 for bread (with jam, butter) and coffee/tea/chocolate and juice. With eggs, it's US$2. Guests have access to the kitchen.
We were initially worried that with all the rooms looking into the courtyard, the noise would travel into the rooms. Although you can hear voices when people talk at normal levels, the guesthouse is still amazingly quiet. I guess the travelers who stay there are of a different breed - they don't speak loudly for the whole world to hear, there are no party animals, no blasting of music, no people watching TV, no smokers, no kids.
The male staff speaks perfect English and can give all sorts of recommendations for food, directions, safety advice, maps for Cajas National Park, etc.
The guesthouse is located on Calle Larga - a major throughfare in town, just across the river Tomebamba. Buses and taxis are easily available. Restaurants are around the corner. It's an easy 5 to 8 minute walk to the main plaza. Across the river, you can walk to a shopping mall (with a foodcourt, fastfood chains and cineplex) and a Supermaxi branch for groceries. The area seems safe, and guests are given keys to the main gate and door to Posada Todos Santos, which are always locked.
We were really reluctant to leave the place and would definitely stay at Posada Todos Santos again in a heartbeat, if we are ever in Cuenca again.
