“Bad room and got robbed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

We were in this hostal for two nights. We got 2 triple rooms, one in basement and one on second floor, they both were not in a great shape, but the room in basement is the worst: terrible smell, noisy and dirty all around. Our bed was trying to fall to pieces.

Everything would be not that bad, but my sister's iPhone gone missing and a large sum of cash was stolen as well. I know I shouldn't have left any money in the hotel, but you don't want to walk with big money around Quito at night.

The guy at the front desk was very unfriendly and rude. The only smiles and good service we got from the girl at the front desk, from another shift, who did not speak any English, but tried her best to help us recover our lost luggage.

The person that writes this comment, left in our Hostal his baggage for two nights, even we had to receive one bag that came from the airport by our responsibility because they were not here. The day they came back they took their things, that were in a looked storage place, and left the hostel. One day after, we received and e-mail from other part of the country, telling they lost their things. We have a safety box for the money and valuable things and we are responsible for what is left there. What people leaves in their bags in a storage place is their responsibility.(No one leaves their money in a bag and leaves the Hostal for two days). We have lots of guest that use correctly the storage service and never loose anything. This is a Spanish speaking country and some off our staff speaks English and others don´t. Like other 23 comments say our main characteristic is cleanness

“Great place to stay”

Our room upstairs with a private bathroom was great. The breakfast was good (best coffee we found in town). It was a little cold there, so make sure you bring warm clothes. The staff was nice and friendly, but they do not speak English very well.

“Great base in Quito”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2010

If you are a budget traveler and just want a good clean basic room on a beautiful street in Mariscal, Quito, Casa Kanela fits the bill. Most rooms are small and somewhat spartin but clean and comfortable and the included breakfast is great. At $27 a night for a double with private bath and full breakfast and free WiFi you can't beat it. The hotel is very safe and secure and the staff are great! The owner's, Carlos and Gabriela speak very good English and offer great advice and travel tips if you ask. We used this hotel as our base and stored luggage here while traveling to other parts of Ecuador. I would definitely stay there again. Caution! If you are looking for 5 star comfort and luxury spend the $100 + a night a go elsewhere but for a friendly place to sleep on a budget Casa Kanela is great. .

“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2010

Casa Kanela is in a great location if you are staying in the Mariscal and would still like a little piece of peace and quiet. It is situated on a very quiet road but is still only two to three blocks from all the bars and restaurants. The hostess is very helpful and polite and the breakfasts are great.

The doubles upstairs are a little better than the first floor but, as a person over 6ft, I found the ceilings a little low and left with a couple of bruises! The showers can be a little temperamental at times too.

However, for the price, this hostal has to be the best bargin in the mariscal and I would highly recommend it.

“Great place in Mariscal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2010

Casa Kanela was a very nice place in the Mariscal Sucre section of Quito. Friendly & helpful staff. Good location in Mariscal. Mariscal section of Quito was a bit shady - but there were police all over. The small street of which it is located - Juan Rodriguez - was quiet (relatively speaking). Although there often seemed to be a few shady people hanging around the street at night, there was often a police officer around to make tourists (like us) feel a bit safer.
