“Friendly, inexpensive, great location”

My husband and I stayed in Quito Ecuador for the first time this month. We chose this hotel for its price and location. We found it to be in a good location, within walking distance of many restaurants and bars! It's a big plus to be able to walk to a place to eat instead of getting a taxi just to be able to go out to eat. However, it was also easy to catch a taxi by walking 1/2 block up the street. The owners were very friendly and allowed us to stow our extra bags with them when we went on two separate trips within Ecuador. This was SO very helpful as we did not want to drag our extra luggage with us during that time. It was also great to have a place where breakfast was included, as this was very handy.

The rooms were cheerful and clean.

I would stay here again.

Room Tip: We liked staying in room 4 because it was facing the main street and was on the second floor which s...

“Good, budget hostal in Quito”

Good, budget hotel in Quito. Spent $20 for a single that was a large room with a double and twin beds and a private bathroom. In the Mariscal area so the music in the neighborhood was quite loud on Saturday night but I slept with earplugs and was fine. Breakfast was decent, eggs, fruit, and toast. Staff was very friendly and very helpful. If you are looking for no frills, this is it. Also has fantastic wifi.

“Its OK - good location, but a little decrepit and grotty”

We stayed here a couple of nights. The staff were quite nice and friendly, rate was pretty reasonable. Rooms were kind of drab, a little dirty and in need of some repairs. But hey: private bathroom and cable TV for $18! Carpet was pretty gross-wife would not walk on it barefoot. The courtyard was quite pretty though, and the included breakfast was decent enough. great location, not too noisy (once the disco shut down about 2). I could get a pretty decent nights sleep. Overall, about what I expected for the price.

“Good value, Relatively Quiet, good location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2010

I stayed 4 nights at Alcala. I got a room for $18, which ended up being $20.16 with tax. For that price I got a comfortable queen size been in a sizeable room, with lots of light on the second floor, birds chirping, foliage, pretty quiet (as quiet as one could hope for being only 2 blocks from the pounding music of La Mariscal). My room was cleaned daily. I had cable TV, and an ensuite bathroom. Free breakfast was available, though I didnt get a chance to take advantage. Good security at Alcala, locked doors, which is critical, as La Mariscal is NOT safe at night, despite what you might read in the guidebooks. They have one free computer terminal available, and free wireless, which actually reached a signal up into my room, which was fantastic. This is not a party hostal, in fact it's dead quiet most of the day, and was pretty empty.

On a side note, Quito is NOT a safe city. I was mugged in La Mariscal just one block off one of the main busy streets. First mugging ever after travelling to 55 countries. Also had an attempted pickpocketing. Avoid going out alone at night, and avoid any street not packed with businesses and lights and other people. Take taxis over any sizable distance, they are mostly honest, and very cheap, nearly any ride is $2 or less.
