“Good value and service for climbers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

This hotel has seen better days - it is bit "tired" and rundown, and the rooms are spartan at best. However, the service from the staff and value received for price paid make up for any shortcomings in the accommodations. This hotel especially caters to those planning climbing trips in the mountains of Ecuador and it is a good place from which to stage a trip. Climbers are notoriously lax in their demands on hotels and lack of depth to their pockets, so this place is perfect for them (us). Non-climbers looking for a base from which to enjoy/explore Quito, might wish to find a more upscale hotel on a quieter street.

“Worse hotel ever!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

Don't allow the photos and other reviews here posted probably by the owner of the hotel fool you. First off, this hotel is situated in a busy street at day time and did I mention a couple of houses down there's a jail (something we didn't see at night). The first night we arrived, Freddy received us at almost 2am, allowed us to situate ourselves without the hassle of paperwork. My first impression of the hotel was fine until I walked into the room. I couldn't stop noticing the dirty carpet. I lifted the bedsheets and noticed dirt; therefore, the whole night I slept on top of the comforter. Bathrooms had a horrible smell, the towels were old and seemed like they belonged to the owner that just borrowed some to the hotel. On Sierra Nevada's homepage, they state fresh/clean towels and clean bathrooms, that's a lie. Breakfast was okay. Because we reserved ahead of time, unfortunately we had to stay there the last night before heading back to the US. On our way to the hotel, our bus broke down so we called Freddy to see if his staff could send a bus to pick us up. We were probably like 15 minutes away (by car) from the hotel. Freddy and his staff told us they would send a bus to pick us up. The bus that had originally broken down was temporarily fix so we decided to call the hotel up within a 3 minute span to advise them we were on our way and to cancel the bus. The bus broke down again so we called the hotel once again to see if they could send the bus to pick us up again. Freddy stated he would send the bus and that they should be there in 15 mins. We repeatedly told him where we were located, the bus never showed up. After almost 45 minutes of waiting and because it was getting dark and cold, we ended up finding a bus on our own. We showed up to the hotel, as soon as we walked everything was dark and noticed Freddy had candles lit. We asked him why was it so dark, he stated that they didn't have electricity for the past 5 days, my family and I immediately asked him why weren't we notified of this because we had kids that couldn't stay in the hotel under those conditions. He didn't response. The bus company that Freddy had coordinated to pick us up never came and additionally they tried charging us for a service not rendered. In numerous times, Freddy told us that he didn't like making business with people like us and that we were making a big deal out of the bus situation. Funny thing is he immediately turned lights on, hid the candles when we told him that we were going to call the police on him. After this incident, my family and I decided to stay in another hotel a couple of blocks from Sierra Nevada. Freddy never reimbursed us, but the fact that we didn't have to sleep in such a despicable place was okay with us. I advise travelers to visit the hotel before reserving because everything Freddy states in his page is a lie.

“Save and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2010

The hotel is situated in a quiet and save area of Quito, you can find many reataurants nearby. Rooms are ok, breakfast is really great (and included) and the hotel has a hot spot for your laptop. Staff is very friendly and helpful, we liked the atmosphere and felt very well there.
Freddy is the owner of "Sierra Nevada Expedtions" and offers tours. He studied in Austria and speaks german, english and french and his guides too speak a second language.
We enjoyed the well organized climbing tours with Freddy and his team., he offers safety and fun. We spent a great time in Ecuador and hope to come again.

“Home away from home.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

We used the associated Hotel Sierra Nevada as our residence while in Quito. Prompt service, excellent breakfast (included) and a colorful hotel all made us feel welcomed and at home.

I used while mountain climbing in Ecuador. I arranged my trip using the logistic services of Sierra Nevada Expeditions. The service Freddy and his staff provided my team was excellent. They went above the norm to show us their country and to assist in our planning. I often reccomend them to others and I'll use their services the next time I am in Ecuador.
