“The Perfect Place For An Adventure\Hike\Eco\Chill Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

I had three days in the Quito Area between destinations and decided to stay at the Santa Lucia Cloud forest lodge. I wanted to get out of the city and go somewhere that was beautiful interesting and Ecuadorean. I liked the idea of going to the cloud forest and of staying at a lodge owned and operated by a local cooperative. I took the bus from Quito to Nanegal and enjoyed the amazing views of the forest and sheer drop down from the highway (if you want to see these views ask for a window seat on the right side of the bus). In Nanegal, I met up with my guide and was driven to the trailhead. We hiked about 45 minutes through moist forest to arrive at the lodge on the mountain top just before sunset.

I stayed in a cabin that has its own bathroom and spectacular views looking out over the mountains and the clouds. Since there is no electricity, I would read by candlelight and just enjoyed the quiet. Every morning I would awake to a changing view of mountains and clouds. There was rain and sun and the temperature ranged between 17-25 celcius.

I had a guide assigned to me while I was there. His name is Poncho and took me on hikes based on my interests. He is from a farming family in the area and is a member of the cooperative that owns the lodge. So he guided from the perspective of someone who knows and loves the area intimately and was very proud of what had been accomplished in Santa Lucia and what they hope to accomplish. I found that all of the staff had this same kind of pride and ownership in what they were doing and it really made my stay so enjoyable. It was so different from the experience you get in a large hotel where the guides and staff are employees and not owners.

The food was simple but very good and filling. We all ate together in the lodge at a large table (staff, guests, volunteers) I especially liked the cheese and yuka tortillas.

At night we played cards and one night the staff started playing guitar and flute and singing to celebrate the Quito festival.

I would definately recommend this place to anyone who wants an adventure\eco\relaxation vacation

Room Tip: rent a cabin if you are travelling with your partner

“Serene setting, excellent cloud forest hiking”

This hike-in lodge is a wonderful way to see the cloud forest 2-3 hours from Quito. The setting is beautiful as the lodge sits on top of a hill and has views in all directions. When we were there we had only sun (unusual) and saw some amazing sunsets. A variety of hikes - some easy and some strenuous - with a bird and plant knowledgeable guide (included in the lodging fee as are 3 meals a day). Staff is friendly. Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The food was simple, but excellent.

“Tranquility in the highlands”

This isolated hike-in lodge is a couple of hours from Quito by bus but a world apart. It's on the slopes of the Andes in the cloud forest and is blessed with beautiful vistas, friendly staff (although it's helpful to have some Spanish; the more the better for full enjoyment of the experience) and hikes of differing lengths and difficulty to be done. This was one of the first things I did during my month in Ecuador, and along with my stay in the Amazon at Sani Lodge, it turned out to be one of the most memorable things I did there. I loved the hiking with a huge variety of birds to be seen. It's great for serious and amateur (like me) birders alike. Even saw a spectacled bear. It's a wonderful location and the lodge is run and supported by the local community so you can feel good about supporting them.

The cabin I had was simple but clean, comfortable and with incredible views of the forest. The guiding (Julio was my guide and spoke great English, a boon for me as my Spanish is very limited) was excellent. Food was simple but good and the local coffee was a great way to greet the day. All in all, for nature lovers or anyone looking for some tranquility I can't recommend this lodge enough.

As an aside, I actually was there in March of 2010 (not 2011) but I can't choose a date that long ago. Since I am a relatively recent TA member, I am catching up on some reviews of places I've been and enjoyed.

Room Tip: I recommend springing for a cabin. I am a budget traveler and wouldn't usually have done so but...

“Wonderful Cloud Forest Hiking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We really liked the cloud forest hikes. I'm a bromeliad and tropical plant fiend, so it was of particular interest. Our cottage had the coolest view of the forests rolling out away from us, simply spectacular view. The food is a bit too vegetarian-based, but the taste was acceptable.

“Like camp, if your camp was in a beautiful cloud forest and run by amazing people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

This is the first place I've traveled that compelled me to join and post on Trip Advisor. Just two hours from Quito, the Santa Lucia lodge is a beautiful getaway that I would recommend to anyone going to Ecuador. Yes, you do have to hike to the lodge, but it's a pretty easy going trek and donkeys haul your stuff. The cloud forest is as magical as it sounds with nearby waterfalls, rivers for swimming, and more bird and orchid species than I could have imagined. What compelled me to write, however, are the twelve families who cooperatively own and run Santa Lucia. They made us feel truly at home and are using the lodge to create green economic development in rural Ecuador. So not only do you have a great vacation, but you also get to support positive change.

Room Tip: The cabins have great views and offer a bit more privacy.
