I had three days in the Quito Area between destinations and decided to stay at the Santa Lucia Cloud forest lodge. I wanted to get out of the city and go somewhere that was beautiful interesting and Ecuadorean. I liked the idea of going to the cloud forest and of staying at a lodge owned and operated by a local cooperative. I took the bus from Quito to Nanegal and enjoyed the amazing views of the forest and sheer drop down from the highway (if you want to see these views ask for a window seat on the right side of the bus). In Nanegal, I met up with my guide and was driven to the trailhead. We hiked about 45 minutes through moist forest to arrive at the lodge on the mountain top just before sunset.
I stayed in a cabin that has its own bathroom and spectacular views looking out over the mountains and the clouds. Since there is no electricity, I would read by candlelight and just enjoyed the quiet. Every morning I would awake to a changing view of mountains and clouds. There was rain and sun and the temperature ranged between 17-25 celcius.
I had a guide assigned to me while I was there. His name is Poncho and took me on hikes based on my interests. He is from a farming family in the area and is a member of the cooperative that owns the lodge. So he guided from the perspective of someone who knows and loves the area intimately and was very proud of what had been accomplished in Santa Lucia and what they hope to accomplish. I found that all of the staff had this same kind of pride and ownership in what they were doing and it really made my stay so enjoyable. It was so different from the experience you get in a large hotel where the guides and staff are employees and not owners.
The food was simple but very good and filling. We all ate together in the lodge at a large table (staff, guests, volunteers) I especially liked the cheese and yuka tortillas.
At night we played cards and one night the staff started playing guitar and flute and singing to celebrate the Quito festival.
I would definately recommend this place to anyone who wants an adventure\eco\relaxation vacation
