We stayed for a few days in Quito and were recommended this hostel. It is in the old town not really close to where the majority of the hostels are, so it is a taxi to get there (don't walk at night).
The hostel is a nice place with basic but clean rooms, the beds are comfy. The Showers are less delightful, and to get a warm shower you have to reduce the flow to barely more than a trickle.
The staff are mostly volunteers (as they call themselves but they do get free accomodation, food and drinks) and as a consequence there is a turnover. As you can imagine not everyone is cut out for customer care, but those that are really do stand out and provide an excellent service.
There is a large roof terrace serving drinks all day and breakfast from 7.30am till 10am. In the evenings you can sign up for the set meal (you need to do this before 5pm) or just mingle on the terrace, and at 11pm they close the bar and the terrace, which is an inconvenience if you are a smoker as there is no where else in the hostel to smoke.
The whole place has a backpacker feel and is a good meeting point/hub for travellers both long trip and short.
The only real problems are the left side of the hostel, D,E and F rooms. You have to climb 3 flights of stairs and through the computer room to get to the far side of the hostel (and then down again). This isn't an issue during the day but at night they lock the only fire escape for that side of the hostel, so if the unthinkable happened half the customers would be stuck with no means of escape, a potentially fatal oversight on the hostels part!
They also provide a taxi service, using taxi's they've 'vetted', the price however is greatly inflated charges, upto %50 more than a taxi you would hail off the street, and we hailed quite a few with not one issue. You just have to be smart and only hail yellow cabs.
All in all the place is fine, it has character and is comfortable, I would stay again knowing what I know, but we like peace and quiet and don't mind using taxis.
