I think this hotel is actually closing down so you may not even have the opportunity to make the mistake of staying here which is a good thing.
Here's the positive:
I really enjoyed the breakfast they provided. A nice lady cooks you some fresh eggs the way you want and there's a small continental buffet. The homemade mora (raspberry) preserves are superb. The views of the city and surrounding mountains are great from the top floor restaurant.
Also the hotel is quite cheap and it's very close to the action at Plaza Foch which is sort of like the Times Square of Quito. On the other hand there's lot's of inexpensive choices and it's very noisy at night in that area.
The negative:
The lowlights include no hot water in the morning for one day and the loss of internet service right before an important e-conference my wife needed to attend. Actually we were going to check out after the first night and the only reason we stayed was because of the wifi in the restaurant. But it conked out right when we needed it the most.
The rooms are pretty shabby and that's pretty much par for the course beyond the big hotels. The beds were the smallest I've ever seen in a hotel. I guess it was a full size but it seemed smaller. No way 2 big people are fitting on those beds. Let's see there were also scary room heaters, broken door locks, bad plumbing, busted remote controls, stained linens and carpets etc. The place needs a serious makeover.
Bottom line is you can do better. If you want a hotel without shelling out for the chains then you can spend a little more than the Chalet Suisse charges and stay at one of the hotels on Rio Amazonas or stay at a nice hostal of which there are many
