“pleasant appearance, but sullen staff and noisy room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

The room and bath were attractive if a bit cold. The guidebook says there is a sauna which is no longer true. Great internet with headsets for skype, though it is a separate charge. Lovely garden to sit in. We picked this place to see a different part of Quito from the Mariscal. Unfortunately when we arrived we found no restaurants in walking distance. The in-hotel restaurant is delicious though expensive. $25 for crepes and a pasta dish isn't great value for Ecuador.

There is a sign in the lobby with a FAQ which seems to respond to previous guest complaints - should have been a red flag. The reception staff was sullen and focused on his computer the entire time. He did take our money, respond to spanish and english, and reserve a cab (all without making eye contact). Our room was next to or under a shared bathroom, which we heard use of in intimate detail all night long. If you are calling in advance I think you could avoid this by requesting a quiet room.

Room Tip: don't be near the shared bathroom

“Great hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here for a few days in 2010-2011 and it was great. I was with a large group from my university, and very few of us spoke Spanish. The staff did a really great job of trying to communicate with us. It was very clean, and not noisy at night (our group was probably the cause of most of the noise). Overall a really great place to stay!

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony will definitely get a little more noise at night, but its definitely worth it!

“Wierd character”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Hostal up to the previous comments, owner helpful and a nice person with good manners, just a point on one of the receptionist: a moody girl with glasses who, differently from the other two receptionists met in other hours of the day and nightshift, was panicking at each of the two or three questions made during the all staying; all the time talking to her she was staring with hostile and completely out-of-place cold looks and not even the shadow of a smile,God knows why; and never greeting first, just answering, with a clear effort and doing something else without watching at you, to a simple hello or good bye.Wierd character for the kind of work she is in.

“Soso hostal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

This hostal defintely was not one the best on our trip. Service was ok, but often they did not really try to understand our attempts to explain things in our mediocre Spanish.
The room was good enough and cleaned every day.
The area is a bit dogy, especially on Sundays when really everthing is closed and it is not safe to walk around in the dark at all. There are no touristic sights, bars or good restaurants in the neighborhood. The restaurant that is in the hostal itself was pretty bad, worst spaghetti ever.
There however is a restaurant across the street that has really cheap (fried) food.

“A fine adults hostel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

It is very clean, with great esthetics. Service is wanting. Staff seems uninterested in helping you and there is limited (at best) English spoken. But the beds were nice with comfy comforters. Breakfast was good. There is a store and two inexpensive eateries near by if you are tring to watch costs. Take a taxi from the airport as there is a fixed charge from the airport and it is way cheaper than the shuttle. Over all, not too bad.
