Firstly, upon arrival late in the evening, the receptionist did not have a room for us despite a booking through hostelworld.com. Rosa, the none-too-helpful receptionist, proceeded to explain is Spanish that the hostel was full and that this was not her fault but another member of staff who was not present. After showing her the printed conformation and advising that we would not budge, she made a few calls and offered a twin room with shared bathroom for the same price as the double we had booked. After further complaints, a double room became available - someone else obviously lost out. The hostel is fine, safe in an area that can be sketchy after dark, with clean rooms and common area and decent breakfast. However, after reading that other visitors had been hit for 12% tax upon leaving, we had emailed looking for a confirmation for the booking and price without receiving a response. The same rude receptionist attempted to charge us said tax leaving but we showed the printed booking form again and informed her we would not pay anything extra. Quito is expensive, La Mariscal in particular as it is in the centre of the city’s nightlife. However, with such poor service and shady billing practices, the Maple Hostel is not worth the effort. Give the place a wide berth.
