“There's Something Here for Everyone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I’m not a hiker. Or a birder. I am an avoider of tours and not exactly in peak physical condition. I’m into insect avoidance. My travel partner is an overly particular, and often unwilling, participant in my travel schemes. How is it possible that these eco-lodges would provide the perfect vacation for us?

The magic that makes the lodge circuit created by Dr. Cruz work is that each location provides a different environmental experience but a similar and cozy housing experience. Each lodge is peaceful, has gleaming wooden floors, provides expertly groomed trails, has warm and attentive staff and cranks out meals you won’t soon forget.

I loved each lodge for different reasons: San Jorge Quito for its whimsical charm, de Milpe for the trail of waterfalls and toucans eating bananas just outside my room; and lovely Tandayapa for its peaceful hillside perch, the panoramic view room with clouds floating past, and a mule named Gertrude bringing my luggage up from the main road.

Even after traveling to 40 other countries this was the trip of a lifetime for me. The lodges allow you to sit back and relax or jump up and get active, as you wish. You have the time and space to let it all sink in and you have Dr. Cruz and other guides to take you on tours and explain what interests you.

There, I was a hiker, a birder and a happy taker of tours. I ate healthy food and walked on enough trails that I perhaps even improved my physical condition. My travel partner loved the rustic opulence of the lodges and the comfort of all transportation being efficiently handled by San Jorge. This vacation allowed us to drop our (often silly) americanized expectations and enjoy one of the most biodiverse countries on earth. Right up close and in person. We loved it.

Here are a few basic points to help you explore the possibilities.

• San Jorge Quito
o 20 minutes from Quito airport by car
o Eco-system: high barren plains
o Altitude: about 11,000 feet
o Wildlife highlights: more than 100 species of birds native only to the Andes region
o Best features: whimsical design of lodge and grounds; proximity to Quito and the airport; the rich, chocolaty coffee atop the wood burning stove in the dining room
• Tandayapa
o 50 minutes from San Jorge Quito by car
o Eco-system: cloud forest
o Altitude: varies between 5,000 and 6,000 feet
o Wildlife highlights: 26 species of hummingbirds and wide variety of other birds
o Best features: tranquility of the cloud forest, available upgraded panoramic view rooms, the hundreds of birds you can see from the open-air dining area
• de Milpe
o 2 hours from San Jorge Quito by car
o Eco-system: tropical rain forest
o Altitude: 3,500 feet
o Wildlife highlights: 300 species of orchids, 11 waterfalls, 400 species of birds
o Best features: grounds and trails surrounding the lodges

Room Tip: I'd ask for anything up high and on a corner with lots of windows!

“Great birding experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

I spent two weeks in Ecuador visiting all four of the San-Jorge reserves and staying at the three Eco-lodges - Quito, Tandayapa and Milpe. I am not a fanaticall birder but I saw 300 species of bird and had a wonderful holiday. The staff were always friendly and helpful, the four course meals beautifully presented and tasty and the accomodation comfortable. If you want classy, sophisticated rooms and service then this is not the holiday for you. However if you enjoy nature, want to see lots of birds and are happy with simple, comfortable accomodation then you will enjoy your visit. Given the chance I will be going back.

“Peak experience! Nature lovers take notice!”

We spent two glorious weeks in Ecuador doing the circuit from San Jorge Eco-Lodge in Quito, Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary, Milpe Eco Lodge, and Sani Lodge in the Amazon. Fabulous & healthy four-course meals in Quito were served by the charming Vicente and Jaibir, and in Tandayapa, Dona Pilar cooked like a domestic goddess. There was a lovely dining room in Quito, and the food presentation was right out of a magazine page. Our guides, Dr. Jorge Cruz, Estalin (Tandayapa), and Carlos Huallinga (Sani Lodge) were knowledgeable and engaging. Whether you are a serious or a backyard birder, if you love nature, this is the place to go. Be prepared with sweaters/jackets for cooler evenings in the mountains and bring lightweight rain gear. Ecuador offers stunning views, friendly people, unforgettable encounters with the natural world, and world class cuisine.

To enjoy this wonderful experience, you must be prepared to tolerate the occasional insect (outdoors). If your idea of vacation is poolside at Disney with cable TV, this is not the place for you, but for the adventurous, it's heaven. Two thumbs up!

Room Tip: Suggest a first-floor room for seniors, as the trek uphill to the rooms with balcony views is a chal...

“Charming ambience but few species”

My husband and I are serious (but not fanatic) birders on our eighth trip to Ecuador. We spent a week birding in eastern Ecuador before spending the last two nights at San Jorge in Quito. The hacienda is a charming old home laden with exquisitely carved wooden furniture and doors, lovely wrought iron rails and window guards, and rooms conveying the feel of the Spanish colonial era. The lodge on the hillside above had comfortable rooms with electric heaters and a partial view of the Quito valley. The campus structures, balustrades, and plant beds provide myriad opportunities for photography. Hummingbirds are active at the feeders, especially in the morning. The manager is exceedingly helpful and willing to please. The food is average.
The property sits on a steep hill, with an extensive trail system. We spent most of our time sitting quietly in the scrubby area above the lodge, but saw few birds. The hummers coming to the feeders were common species, but it was nice to see them close up and get photos. If you are a novice birder, this is a good place to start or end your trip. For us, the birding was disappointing.
There is no denying the campus is showing its age. There were few staff to help keep up the grounds and make improvements. The brickwork/patios/walkways are uneven, and there are many steps in unexpected places, so if you have a vision problem or a physical disability, this is not the place for you. For me, it was an effort to get around without tripping or losing my balance. The walkway from the rooms down to the main house is very steep, with railings only part way down. Luckily, I had someone to hold on to. Other guests didn't seem to have a problem, but they were younger or in better shape. The advantage of staying at San Jorge is that you can stay in a country setting so close to the airport.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms in the main house on lower level. Reserve one of those if you are in any way...
