“Stay Away!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Though I emailed as to my arrival, I still had to wait 90 mins. for the caretaker to return and open the door. Not sure where he was. First room was ok, but faced the street with all the accompanying noise problems. Asked to switch for the second night. No hot water, but it didn't matter as the shower was broken and could only dribble down instead of spraying. I'm cupping my hands trying to collect cold water to rinse the soap off. A terrible experience as I shower at night and Quito is quite chilly with the sun down. The caretaker did nothing regarding the shower or hot water. I'd give it a one star, except it was 8 bucks so I can't really complain about the price. Go only if money is your sole consideration.

“We would stronglty recommend AGAINST staying here.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2011

We stayed here because we wanted to stay in the Old Town after sepnding a couple nights in Mariscal; this was a Lonely Planet recommendation. It needs to be taken off their list.

The place was a dump. The bathroom was not clean, there was no shampoo or soap; the water was literally cold -- we had no hot water for two days to shower. The mattress on one bed was so soft to be unsleepable and when we switched beds the springs o nthe second bed broke in the middle of the night. Plus, there was frequently a long delay in buzzing us up and one Friday night about midnight we stood waiting outside for about 10 minutes until someone came to let us in. Breakfast was bad -- coffee was instant. Our room was not cleaned despite very few others staying in the hotel and being out all day. It was so bad the whole scene took on a comedy of errors.

“Great inexpensive hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 March 2011

I stayed at the La Posada Colonial on Garcia Marino Ave. I know there are two hotels in Quito with the same name and the other one is not as good. The location was great one block away fron Plaza Grande by the Presidential Palace. The room was right on the street side so bring ear plugs as it get loud at night.
The hotel was like a museum with beautiful furniture and paintings. the room was large and quite nice. The shower was luke warm water. The hotel is very clean and its like staying in someones home. The staff was great but communication was hard as I only spoke alittle spanish. But I would translate what I wanted from the computer and write what I needed down for them to read and they were more than happy to do whatever I needed. The breakfast was just ok but there is a great pastry shop close by and with great coffee.
$30 a night for a single it was a great value. There is a hotel just down the street that charged hundreds per night. I would stay there again and again.

“Loved, loved, loved it here!!!!!!”

One of my favorite hotels during my recent trip to South America. This hotel was in a fabulous location and was absolutely elegant! I still can't believe how affordable it was. I stayed in a big beautiful room with a balcony. Gorgeous room. Wonderful, yummy breakfast included in a nice restaurant setting. Safe and gated. No internet available. Hot water took awhile to kick in. The hotel was practically empty when I stayed there (I think I was the only one there) and so the service and attentiveness was not really great, but if you need something, I am sure they will help. I really like this hotel and it was a highlight on my trip. Be sure to look at all the rooms first!!! It is okay to ask to see them. Try to get Room 6 or one with a balcony!

“Great staff, Noisey Street”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2010

There are two hotels in the Old Town of Quito with this name. We are told that one of them is in a less desirable area. The one we stayed in is on Garcia Morena near Plaza Grande.
The locatiion is excellent as there are a number of restaurants and coffee shops less than 5 minutes walk. Also a number of ATM machines. We moved from the New Town (Mariscal) to the Old Town as we were told it is much safer to walk around, especially after dark. We found this to be true. The Old Town is well lit and there is a large police presence on the streets and in the food courts etc.
La Posada Colonial is a huge building but has only 10 rooms. It has a feeling of being left over from a bygone era and is very ornate. We paid US$44 per night for the two of us and that included breakfast.
The rooms were quite adequate. From what we could tell they all had opening windows to the street. Varying sizes but nothing shoebox size. There was free wireless internet in the hotel. It didn't work in all the rooms but it did work in the dining room etc.
The staff were very helpful. We left luggage here (free of charge) while we went to the Galapagos. When we returned it was already in our room waiting. It was no trouble for them to call taxis at an early hour and there was always someone on hand. Security of the building was excellent. Nobody could walk in off the street after dark
It is to be noted that there are a large number of stairs to get into the hotel and no lift so not so suitable if you are unfit or have any disability.
Whilst we enjoyed staying at this hotel, we found it to be extremely noisey at night. Sleep was interrupted regularly. There was loud music almost every night (we wondered if there was a nightclub close by). Shouting in the streets, taxis beeping their horns etc. If this bothers you, I would suggest you don't stay here.
Otherwise, it was great.
