“Very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

We just spent three days at the hotel over Chile's indepence Day weekend.

The Hotel is very nice, large rooms, comfortable beds, nice furnishings, very clean, attractive grounds, nice views from the front rooms, very friendly and helpful staff, very good breakfast.

The hotel is in an interesting section of the city, with lots of students and many excellent restuarants. Unfortuanately since it was a major holiday weekend, most were closed. On Sunday night there were only two small cafes open to eat at.

There were afew issues that was not the hotel's falt. The dog that lives in the house next to the hotel likes to bark at passing dogs in the evening.
The road is closed infront of the hotel for sewage repairs, so it is dificult to get to the hotel, we had to drag our luggage, about a block along a narrow side walk to get to the hotel. There is no parking available by the hotel. The noise of jack hammers in the morning was a problem. And people banging on the door across the street in the very early morning was an issue.

If you have problems with mobility, you should not stay at this hotel as it is on a hill with steep side walks, there are a lot of steps to get into the hotel, and there is no elevator in the hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor have amazing views.

“Third time going back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

There are several boutiques hotes in Valparaiso, this must be one of the first ones to become one. The house is a patrimonial site regardinfg it was the residence of the prestigiuos English painter Thomas Somerscales in the end of XIX. It is well located just in the border betwenn the two top hils pf the city (Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción) so you are walking distance to the best rtestauirants and amenities of the area. As many of the hotesl in Valparaiso there are no parking place (thios one has only one, so you have to care to reserve it in advance)

“Hard to believe this hotel was recommended by Fodors and Frommers”

This building was probably magnificent a century ago, but now it is threadbare, outdated, and not overly clean. We paid $200 for a room with a "terrace" on the top floor. The terrace was really a tiny little porch with a tiny table squeezed in. The room was stuffy and cluttered, but It did have some pretty magnificent viewsof the harbor and coastline. We were told this was a very nice part of town, but we probably wouldn't have realized this on our own. There were some very pricey restaurants with impressive menus in the vicinity. There were also many alleys and side streets to explore. I'm not sure after our wanderings that Valparaiso has much to offer in the way of hotels. We could have gone 5 miles down the coast and stayed at the Sheriton, but then we would never have seen the awesome Valparaiso.

“Just wonderful!!!”

What a fantastic place! The house itself is increadible, like going back in time, but to a glorious time. Every detail of the house is beautiful. The room is spotless clean and very cozy. We stayed in room n.7, witch is in the top floor of the house, like an attic, very cozy and yet with a lot of space. The bed was very comfortable, soft linen, great bathroom. Breakfast was great, and it can be served in your room or at the beautiful breakfast room downstairs. Location was great, at Cerro Alegre, a beautiful neighborhood, with lovely colorful houses and lots of craft shops. Walking on the streets around the hotel is a real pleasure. I think that is important because Valparaiso is a big city and some parts of it are not so pleasurable. Totally recommend it!!

“Disgraceful scam attempted by staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2011

This is undoubtedly a lovely hotel in a great location, but unfortunately my stay was ruined by the attempt of the receptionist to run a scam on my room rate. He offered me a $30 reduction in the rate if I paid by cash. I agreed to this as it didn't seem too inconvenient to make a small saving - but as soon as I had checked in, he (name hector) began to hassle me for the money. This continued during the evening, until at breakfast, when he interrupted me to ask me to pay there and then. My suspicions that he was trying to pocket the cash were realised when he told me I could have no receipt for it. He began to make up ridiculous stories about extra taxes due and only abated when my Chilean friend intervened and told him he was acting illegally - by not giving me a receipt.

It was extremely unpleasant and I only resisted calling the police to save more unpleasantness on my vacation. This was clearly not the first time he had tried it and I will be writing to the owners to formerly complain. Do not visit this hotel while this scam is being attempted!!!!
