“10 STAR!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

Wow...can't rave enough. Don't let the quaint outside view of the front intimidate you...it doesn't look like much from the street but inside it's much nicer. Jose Miguel met us at the front door happy to see us and extremely friendly! The place isn't huge and it's not exactly "central"...but it's quiet and a beautiful combination of historic beauty with a modern twist of color, primarily a beautiful red and black and white. VERY clean, very friendly. We actually arrived super early in the day because we arrived via cruise and had to disembark early. We arrived at the hotel at 8:30 in the MORNING, hoping only for some kind of grace simply to leave our 4 suitcases and 2 carry-ons somewhere in the building until the 3:00 PM check in time. Jose Miguel at the reception desk not only spoke perfect English, French, and Spanish with some Portuguese as well, but he also let us check in at 8:30, gave us a room, with key, and helped us carry our 4 heavy suitcases to the room. He insisted it was so worry and at noon they would move our luggage for us from the temp room to our permanent room for the night. Meanwhile we had full use of the "temporary" room. Couldn't believe it. After working for years in hotels I couldn't get over this kind of customer service! I've never worked anywhere that would allow the customer to check in that early without charging another entire night's stay!

Internet is wifi and free. They also have a nice computer in the guest area in case the customer doesn't have a laptop. Of course we didn't have any transformer for our laptop since we are traveling to Brazil and do not require transformers there....so we asked our new friend Jose at the front desk, although not expecting to find one...and naturally he had a full transformer/converter from the 220 to 110 for our laptop to lend us! The TVs in the room are LCD with full HD. Not a huge size (although very adequate for the room size), so very good quality since most TV's that size don't come so well equipped.

There is a little bar/cafe in the hotel also that offers several types of mineral water, beer, wine, and liquors. They have a free breakfast included which is quite nice compared to others we've been to. They actually let us eat breakfast when we got here at 8:30, even though we weren't paid for until later that night! Just off the top of my head I remember freshly made orange juice (like, FROM ORANGES, not bottled stuff!), milk, yogurt (liquid kind common in S. America), scrambled eggs, ham, cheese, a type of sliced cake, sliced bread (white and wheat), I think I saw a toaster...there were two or more types of jam/jelly for bread. Also coffee and hot milk and two types of cereal. Table setup was adorable and very stylish.

There are quite a few comfy chairs to relax inside and an entire deck outside with table/chair setup and patio furniture as well.

We can't get enough of this place and plan to stay again in future travels!!
NOTE: bring money for a taxi since you're NOT going to want to walk up this mountain side. Taxi from the bottom of the hill to top (hotel) was about 6 USD, or 2,900 Pesos. Definitely worth it unless you're into burning thighs! :-) HIGHLY recommended!

“Nice Boutique Hotel - But The Traffic Noise!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

Everything said on TR about Ulytramar being clean; having character; having cheerful, friendly staff, having a modern style - are all true. And it was a pleasant place to stay, perched on top of the hills of the facinating and charachter filled city. But most rooms on both floors directly face the street below and it is hard to avoid the traffic noise both evening and early morning. The steep streets mean that cars and busses and motor bikes have to really get their vehicle going to get up the hill - and that results in unavoidable street noise. Theer are a few rooms that do not sit on the street so, if you are coming here, perhaps request one of those. The only other ´knock´is the lack of a bar fridge in the rooom.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the few that do not face the street - you might avoid traffic noise

“Great Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We spent one night foor a romantic weekend in this lovely hotel, and we loved it!
The hotel is freshly renovated and they made a great job in the design of the place. The staff was very helpful and polite. It is in a walking distance to great restaurants and attractions, but not next door, which actually was good. It is reachable by public transportation and car, and well, you can walk if you dare go uphill (but that´s Valparaiso!).
We would return in a hearbeat!

“Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We went to this hotel recently in spring of this year. We found it a very nice hotel, very quiet, clean, boutique as we like, good service and very peaceful. Things that impress us were the very nice and new furniture, the beautiful and modern style of the rooms and of the interior of the hotel. The rooms are very confortable, with good beds, a nice terrace and with a wonderful view of all Valparaiso's bay. It has a very good breakfast. Also its ubicated in a very nice and distinguish place of Valparaiso. I highly recommend this boutique hotel in Valparaiso, specially for couples, little group of friends and families.

“Nice boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

Located up on the hills of Valparaiso, a city declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Ultramar hotel is a modern boutique hotel built on what used to be a miners lodging. The original building dates from 1907. The Ultramar Hotel was lately built and has already been renovated.
Our room was comfortable, well heated, with simple furnishings and nicely decorated. We had a magnificent view of the bay.
Common areas are decorated with a minimalist look. Free internet is available. It has a large terrace with a great view of the ocean.
They serve a nice complete breakfast with fresh fruits, yogurt, eggs, jam, coffee and toasts.
The hotel is clean, staff very attentive, service excellent.
Altogether a very good place to stay, especially if you like to walk and take photos when you visit an interesting city like this one.
