The most attractive places of Valparaíso are up on the hills. The flat area in downtown (called "el plan" in Chilean Spanish) has some nice spots too (el Puerto, for instance) but being very centrally located is not necessarily an advantage here. Puerta de Alcalá is central, but other hotels of the same price range are in much better locations, especially in Cerro Alegre or Cerro Concepción. We decided to stay here, just because what started as a daytrip became a whole weekend in Valpo and had no reservations anywhere else. Breakfast included a very good coffee, but the rest was the usual bread, butter and jam. The room was tidy and very quiet at night (something hard to find in "el Plan"), but every once in a while you could hear someone using a grinder in the kitchen during the morning. Nothing terrible, though. The bedcover was kind of worn and the walls needed a hand of paint. The bathroom was well equipped and extremely clean. The staff was polite but not particularly enthusiastic. We paid nearly 100 dollars for the room. Other hotels provide basically the same in nicer neighbourhoods for less. Bottom line: if you have time to look for a hotel, skip this one.
Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room!
