“A Real Taste of Valparaiso”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011

We were almost scared off by reviews posted on this Web site....but we're glad we went ahead with our plans and stayed at the Brighton. It is in a primo location with a spectacular view of the bay. We stayed in room "A" and had windows that looked out on three sides. It is located in the heart of the colorful neighborhoods and easy access via Ascensor Concepcion to the downtown area below us. There are also several excellent restaurants within easy walking distance. The manager on duty during our stay, Pauline, couldn't have been more helpful. And lunch on their patio overlooking the bay was a treat.
For my wife and I, it was an opportunity to explore Valparaiso prior to leaving on a cruise. People who stay here must understand that the building is unique and old. But our room was clean and comfortable and that is what we cared about the most. Our stay was most enjoyable and I highly recommend it.

“great B&B, amazing view!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2011

We stayed in room X for several days, it is the one with the balcony over the restaurant in their website photo. Then we moved to room D for a few more days. Both have ensuite bathrooms. Room X is the nicest. It is larger than the others with a lovely little balcony over the patio with an amazing view of the harbour. Room D is another level up, smaller with roof eaves and a view is of the hills. It is still very nice. There is a large, comfortable common room with a couch, tables, chairs and the same great harbour view. The restaurant is very good and they make a fantastic pisco sour! Different musicians play in the evenings. Breakfast was fresh fruit salad, yogurt, cereal, toast, cheese, jam and choice of beverage, and was included in the price. The staff were very friendly, a few of them spoke English. Even the resident cats were friendly! The Hotel Brighton is a landmark in Valparaiso and is part of the "Atkinson Walk".

“We had lunch in the patio.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2010

We were staying right next door at the Atkinson Hotel, but we had lunch here. They have a beautiul large patio and the day was perfect outside. The patio is perched above a steep hillside with a terrific view of the downtown streets. On the day we were there were street performers in the square below which was entertaining. The food was good, the service was slow, but life is slower in Chile and everywhere we went the check just did not want to get to the table, it encourages leisurely dining for sure.

“Basic and VERY noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2010

Booked this because some other options were not available, and location was great. Paid about $90 for one night. Room was basic but clean enough and functional. OK breakfast included. Free wireless.

Be aware that this place is very noisy. Walls are thin. More importantly, downstairs bar has activity until very late, and has live music on many days, going past midnight. I guess you could be OK if you go downstairs for the music. But I would recommend finding another accommodation in the neighborhood, and maybe going here for a drink to enjoy the view and music.

“Don't do it!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

I booked The Brighton in a rush, and relied on the Frommers review which was very positive, without cross checking Tripadvisor. Big mistake!

To be fair, The Brighton does have its good points, but only as a place for a night out, not as a place to stay.

When I arrived I was directed to the restaurant to check-in. I should have realised that something was wrong when I was asked to pay for my two night stay up. I am assuming that they have experienced guests going to their rooms and then deciding to stay in another hotel...so they get your money before you see the room.

The hotel is frankly bizarre! My room was in the the roof space, and as such it was impossible to stand up straight in the bathroom, or while taking a shower. The bathroom was in poor condition.
The room, and the hotel, is in poor condition internally, although attractively painted externally.
There were dead flies squashed into the wallpaper, where I imagine previous guests had decided to kill the flies they found in the room. When I arrived there were five or six flies buzzing around in the room.

One of the strangest aspects of the room is that fact that they have installed an automatic air freshener spray (normally found in hotel toilets) on the wall above the bed. This means that the guest periodically gets sprayed.
I am assuming that they did this to (unsuccessfully) attempt to mask the smell of drains.

General levels of cleanliness were about average.

I was considering staying another night, and priced a double room at the neighboring hotel, Hotel Manoir Atkinson, which seemed to be a very nice place. The difference in room rate between the two hotels was US$25 per night, and it is definitely worth paying the extra not to stay at the Brighton.

On the upside, The Brighton is a very nice place to socialise at. The staff in the restaurant were consistently polite and friendly, and food is average depending on your choice.
On Friday and Saturday nights resident singer Marta sings French, Chilean and international songs, and supported by a very good guitarist. Marta creates a fantastic fun atmosphere, and I would recommend a weekend visit just to hear her sing.

However, don't stay at The Brighton, it really is a terrible hotel, one of the worst I have experienced!!
