I booked The Brighton in a rush, and relied on the Frommers review which was very positive, without cross checking Tripadvisor. Big mistake!
To be fair, The Brighton does have its good points, but only as a place for a night out, not as a place to stay.
When I arrived I was directed to the restaurant to check-in. I should have realised that something was wrong when I was asked to pay for my two night stay up. I am assuming that they have experienced guests going to their rooms and then deciding to stay in another hotel...so they get your money before you see the room.
The hotel is frankly bizarre! My room was in the the roof space, and as such it was impossible to stand up straight in the bathroom, or while taking a shower. The bathroom was in poor condition.
The room, and the hotel, is in poor condition internally, although attractively painted externally.
There were dead flies squashed into the wallpaper, where I imagine previous guests had decided to kill the flies they found in the room. When I arrived there were five or six flies buzzing around in the room.
One of the strangest aspects of the room is that fact that they have installed an automatic air freshener spray (normally found in hotel toilets) on the wall above the bed. This means that the guest periodically gets sprayed.
I am assuming that they did this to (unsuccessfully) attempt to mask the smell of drains.
General levels of cleanliness were about average.
I was considering staying another night, and priced a double room at the neighboring hotel, Hotel Manoir Atkinson, which seemed to be a very nice place. The difference in room rate between the two hotels was US$25 per night, and it is definitely worth paying the extra not to stay at the Brighton.
On the upside, The Brighton is a very nice place to socialise at. The staff in the restaurant were consistently polite and friendly, and food is average depending on your choice.
On Friday and Saturday nights resident singer Marta sings French, Chilean and international songs, and supported by a very good guitarist. Marta creates a fantastic fun atmosphere, and I would recommend a weekend visit just to hear her sing.
However, don't stay at The Brighton, it really is a terrible hotel, one of the worst I have experienced!!
