“Great find in Valparaiso”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

We found the Alecon purely by accident, and totally lucked out. The location was great - easy to get to and in a safe area. It's at the end of a short street and is across from a little church. There are a couple of bars and convenience stores on the hilltop. The owner, Alberto, was very friendly and let us see the rooms before we agreed to stay there.

Once we chose a room (queen bed with private bathroom for about $50USD), Alberto drew out a walking tour he suggested we take. He also suggested a restaurant along the way (Puerto Viejo) and what to order there (parrilla de marisco), and it was awesome! Best meal we had in Chile.

Breakfast (bread, cheese, ham, yogurt, juice, and tea or coffee) was included in the price of the room. The bed was firm (which I like), our room overlooked the cemetery one hillside over, we had cable tv, an armoire, and a tiny fridge. The shower was the only thing I'd give lower marks for at this hotel. It was hard to get the temperature right - kept going from scalding to freezing.

Upon checkout, we had the option to pay with US dollars or Chilean pesos. Alberto offered to hold our bags for the rest of the day, and he drew out a walking tour of Vina del Mar for us as that was our next destination. With Alberto's help, our trip to Valparaiso was easy and fun. We'd definitely stay at the Alecon again.

“Stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2010

I won't repeat the other reviews, but it's like this in a nutshell: Alberto always puts in the extra effort, and really cares. If you can get a room there New Years Eve, jump at the chance. Bob

“One of our best experiences in South America”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2009

We found this hostel by chance . However, several aspects of the Alecon Finehostel made it stand out amongst other hostels and hotels on our South American holiday. Alberto, who ran the hostel, made us very welcome.

Alberto speaks excellent English, and he provided us with an enthralling oral history of various "cerros" of Valparaiso. Alberto also provided us with a self-guided walking tour of the historic area, so that we could enjoy the best of the city in the short time that we were there.

I also note that this hostel is suitable for everybody - including solo travelers and families. There was no suggestion that my same-sex partner and I would be choosing a dorm, which we found very respectful. Our room was very nicely presented with a couple of wine glasses.

Access to both the commercial and historic districts is easy from this hostel. Le Pastis Bistro - which ranked top in our dining experiences in South America - is just down the street. Don't miss a walk along the "paseos" at night; Paseo Atkinson is just a few steps away from this hostel.

“Fantastic, perfect service, Alberto´s advice really helped us to enjoy Valparaiso and Chile fully. Well recommended!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2009

Lovely little hostel with great views of the city, nice rooms with a good breakfast. The owner, Alberto, is fantastic, speaks very good English and his advice helped us to enjoy his city which is easier said than done due to the self styled 'chaotic´nature of Valñpariaso´s design. His advice also helped us to enjoy the rest of Chile even more, his recommendation of Coquimbo was throughly enjoyed. Me and my friends fully recommend this hostel, great value for money and a place we won´t forget. Thanks alot Alberto and all the best!
