We found the Alecon purely by accident, and totally lucked out. The location was great - easy to get to and in a safe area. It's at the end of a short street and is across from a little church. There are a couple of bars and convenience stores on the hilltop. The owner, Alberto, was very friendly and let us see the rooms before we agreed to stay there.
Once we chose a room (queen bed with private bathroom for about $50USD), Alberto drew out a walking tour he suggested we take. He also suggested a restaurant along the way (Puerto Viejo) and what to order there (parrilla de marisco), and it was awesome! Best meal we had in Chile.
Breakfast (bread, cheese, ham, yogurt, juice, and tea or coffee) was included in the price of the room. The bed was firm (which I like), our room overlooked the cemetery one hillside over, we had cable tv, an armoire, and a tiny fridge. The shower was the only thing I'd give lower marks for at this hotel. It was hard to get the temperature right - kept going from scalding to freezing.
Upon checkout, we had the option to pay with US dollars or Chilean pesos. Alberto offered to hold our bags for the rest of the day, and he drew out a walking tour of Vina del Mar for us as that was our next destination. With Alberto's help, our trip to Valparaiso was easy and fun. We'd definitely stay at the Alecon again.
