“good location, decent rates, staff not particularly friendly”

We stayed at the Diego del Almagro and it is certainly convieniently located. It's right near la moeda metro stop, not far from the Plaza del Armas. Parking is free and easy, although I don't recommend renting a car in Santiago (we had a friend from the outskirts of town come in and stay with us).
The only negative, and it's not very negative, is the desk (and to some extent the breakfast) staff. They don't go out of their way to greet you or help you out.

“Good hotel for the price and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2007

I went to Santiago on a business trip, so my company put me in another hotel named, Atton de las Condes. However, since it was out in suburbia, once my work was all done, I decided to move to Diego de Almagro.

I booked the hotel at the last minute and my rate was the normal rate; I couldn't get the lower rate of $64/night for the executive room. I saw another rate also of $59 on the web, but it seems to get those rates, you need to book a few days ahead of time.

Diego de Almagro is right in downtown santiago. The lobby is sparkling clean and the staff at the front desk was 'ok'. They were not as professional as the staff in atton, but then again, the atton hotel seems to cater to the business traveler, so at the atton, the staff was very polite and very helpful. The staff at Diego was polite, but not forthcoming with information. I found the housekeepers to be more knowledgeable on how to get around the city, than the front desk staff. By the way, i do speak spanish so communication was not a problem. The staff at the front desk did speak english as there were several english speaking guests around.

My room was very clean. The furniture (chairs, desk) is quite old, and it looks like it needs to be replaced. However, the bed was comfortable enough for me, and I have a bad back, but I slept very well.

The bathroom was so sparkling clean that I almost slipped inside as it was very slippery. I was really surprised with the cleanliness of the bathroom. I've definitely seen so much worst in latin america. One thing that the room didn't have was an alarm clock. I always wake up in the middle of the night and I look around to the first night clock to see the time, but this hotel doesn't seem to have one. I also asked for an iron from the front desk, and they said they would call me back, and never did. I had to go downstairs to get one.

Internet connection---the first 3 floors have wireless, and i was on the third floor, but my beautiful laptop died on my trip, so didn't get a chance to test the wireless. I had to use the 2 free computers in the lobby which had a fast connection. However, many guests line up to use that, but if u wake up early enough or come back from your tours at 11pm or so, nobody is waiting to use them. I was under the impression that there would be internet cafes nearby, but I walked and walked, and there was no internet cafes near the hotel---there are a few in plaza de armas, but none within immediate walking distance of the hotel. Sombody had told met there were, but I just couldn't find them. The girl at the front desk didn't know either....

Breakfast---they had 3 long tables set up with the following:
3 types of juices---peach, orange and pineapple. 2 pitchers of milk. There were 2 bowls that had cocoa in it---one dark, the other one normal quality i guess. There were all these type of pastries on another half of the table. On another table they had sausages, eggs, eggs with ham, and bread. Another table had cereal and coffee. So there was plenty of breakfast around, but the room where the breakfast is held, is quite small. first time i went there were not enough tables, so i waited about 5 minutes to finally sit down. Food was good enough so no complaints.
Way better than the american continental breakfasts for sure.

So in summary----I would stay in this hotel again as it met all my needs. I'm the type of person that is out exploring the city the whole day, and just come to my room to sleep, take a shower, etc. So for me, the room was perfect. If you like to stay in the room and watch tv, this is not the hotel for you, as they do have small tvs in the room. The hotel is also located about 2 min walk from a metro station so you can go to other locations of santiago very easily. Matter of fact, i walked from this hotel to bellavista and that was a 40 min walk and it was midnite when i did this, so is also safe---at least it was for me.

If youre the type of traveler lookign for extra frills, this is not the place for you, for sure.

“Great location, ok rooms”

While the rooms were just ok, the location more than made up for it. We were right on the main street of Santiago with the Presidential Palace only two or three blocks away. All other sites of interest were also within walking distance, being no more than 30 minutes at most. The staff was generaly helpful and English was good enough to communicate. Breakfast, with fruit, cereals, scrambled eggs and sausages, juices, and more, was included, as was computers with Internet access. We felt safe and would definitely stay there again. Note that we booked through VisitChile.com and were able to get a room for under $80US/night, much better than what they will quote you otherwise.

“I recommend this hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2007

I was pleased wit this hotel from the moment I arrived at 07:30 after an overnight flight, and was given my room immediately and without comment at my early arrival.

My room was pleasant, but travelers shouldn't expect luxury; this is an aging hotel in need of some modernization. However, my room was very clean, quiet and comfortable, with wonderful blackout curtains, effective air-conditioning and a powerful shower.

The hotel staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. There is free but slow internet in the lobby and an adequate breakfast is included. Its location is excellent; with a Line One Metro station right outside, the terminus for the airport bus around the corner, and the bustling downtown business and government area within a ten-minute walk.

“Nice and comfy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2007

The rooms were great. The 2 double beds were very comfy and the bathroom nice and clean. Breakfast was great with a good selection. However, if you ask for real juice you get charged a fortune. Tea and coffee available during the day in the lobby. 2 PCs with internet access which you have to queue for (and occasionally tell people to move off). Some of the hotel staff were on strike during our stay and they stood outside the hotel door from 8am-8pm banging drums, blowing whistles, and littering the lobby with shredded paper. The staff that were working were appologetic and gave us rooms higher up the building so we wouldn't be disturbed.
