“Perfect Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2011

We stayed at One Florence Close for one month whilst we were looking for a long term rental in Singapore. It was perfect for what we wanted. It is very clean, with a lovely young lady there every day continually cleaning and ensuring everything is in order. She cleans the bedrooms each day, and makes the beds for you every morning. She also changes the linen regularly.

It is very safe (although so is most of Singapore), although it is slightly away from the centre. It is on the purple MRT line though, so if you get on at Kovan and stay on that line for 20 mins, you will be at Clarke Quay, and half an hour to Harbour Front. We didn't find the journey took too long, especially as you don't have to change lines. Being slightly out the centre means it is quieter and a more residential area. This means it probably isn't suitable for party people, as there isn't much to do in the area and a taxi back after the MRT shuts would cost more than a central hostel. The hostel is quiet, even when people have been out at night.

Everything is very modern. Showers & toilets are all modern and clean. Never have any problems getting an available cubicle. The bedrooms may be on the small side (we had a double room) but they were fine for us. We had a double mattress on the floor, but it didn't bother us and was still very comfy. We were able to fit our 4 suitcases and 2 holdall bags with all our life inside in the room. They have air con, a perfectly good working TV with 5 channels, and you can lock the doors and take the key away with you. All rooms are private and have bright, funky duvet covers. The rooms for 3 + had bunkbeds in and looked a lot bigger. Most the rooms are the same design and layout though. All the rooms have wi-fi so perfect if you have your laptop and they have a communal computer with internet too.

They have 2 cats, so if you are allergic then it isn't best for you. However, they were no bother at all and we barely noticed them there - except when one fell asleep outside our door. They are quiet, toilet-trained and don't leave any fur about.

The staff are very friendly. There was a minimal communication difficulty but it was easily sorted. They extended our stay for us without any trouble although beware, as it cost us more than it did originally via hostel bookers because a) hostel bookers offered a discount price and b) the rates had increased with the time of year whilst we had been staying there. This meant it cost a lot more than we anticipated.

Travellers of all ages there. Young people and old alike of all nationalities. There is a kitchen space where you are able to do some light cooking and make hot drinks. You can also leave food and drinks in the fridge and no one takes anything that isn't there own.

It is about 2 minutes walk from the MRT, and set back in a road (it looks like a house from the outside) so it is all very nice and homely. It is quite hard to direct taxi drivers too though so make sure you remember location pin-points and names of roads surrounding it (although this is a general problem with directing taxi drivers around Singapore, not just to Kovan).

There are a few restaurants and one mall around the area, but it is mainly street food or dominos pizza to choose from. We just jumped on the MRT to get food and had no problems cooking occasionally too.

My boyfriend felt comfortable getting ready for interviews here and dressing smartly in the environment without worrying about getting dirty etc. They had washing facilities for $10 (maid washed as much washing as you wanted, folded it all once dry and brought it back to your room) so perfect for people on business too (quite a few businessmen stayed there).

I would defo rate this place highly. We had a lovely stay there for a month and preferred it to the first hostel we stayed in. However - if you're looking for a good night out every night then this probably isn't the place for you. But if you've been backpacking, and you want some quiet privacy and to feel 'home' for a short while, then this cosy little hidden gem will do just that.

“Small but cosy, clean and good value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

If you can handle the truly tiny rooms, this is a great place!

We stayed in a double which is indeed very very small, but not an issue for us given the nice furnishing, cosy bed, lots of hangars to place your clothing and tables to put your stuff on and TV! Very clean.

The facilities are good, clean (but small...) showers and toilets. Big kitchen and table and lots of sinks. Free tea and a fridge to place any of your stuff in. And yes the cats are so cute, Persians who look grumpy- possibly the fluffiest and fattest cats I have ever seen!

Not the greatest location depending on your preferences- far out from down-town but the metro is literally a 3 minute walk and is luckily on the same line as China Town/Little India/Clarke Quay which take about 15-20 minutes to get to. Plus the metro is cheap. Lots of restaurants around and a really cheap internet cafe a minute away.

We got a discount on-line so good value for expensive Singapore! The hostel is a bit like Singapore itself- lots of rules posted on the walls! But didn't detract from the good stay!

Recommended.

“Very Nice & Pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

I chose this place simply becos of the price, the convenience and away from the tourist. I am attending a class in Singapore and not willing to spend a fortune on hotel rooms. This place is nice, the room is small but clean, the place is a bit old, but very convenient if you travel to the central, the staff is extremely friendly. I will recommend to anyone who wish to explore Singapore with local flavor but not not on tourist perspective.

“Tiny room but cheap by Singapore standards”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2010

I booked this place as I did not want to pay the incredible sums demanded in Singaporean Hotels. This place sounded ok but it the rooms are really small & without a window. For 3 people there was a double mattress on the floor & a mezzanine style double mattress on top. Not much else in the way of floor space for luggage. The room was air conditioned but the hallway, kitchen & small bathrooms are not.
The location is kinda out of town but we didn't mind that as there were good places to eat nearby esp. food court behind the station.
Very good wifi internet access.
I would recommend it if you are travelling alone or a couple & want a cheap private room in Singapore. (without a private bathroom)

Located in the heartland of Singapore but close to MRT. Will take you 20mins to get anywhere interesting. Accomodation was basic and far less glamorous than the photos on the web site - It is an old house in a side street off a busy road that they have converted into tiny rooms. Very noisy if you stay in the front room. Not great value for money relative to what and where it is. Managers were very friendly though. Place was kept clean (they have a live in maid who shares all the facilities and will also do your washing for you if you pay her). However, they have a couple of cats that roam free in the hostel and crapped in the showers every day I stayed there.
