“Great little hostel but a bit of a trek”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

This is a nice clean hostel tucked away in Kovan, Singapore. It is close to the MRT and several local shops and restaurants. The two cats Romeo and Pepper are great and will spend most of the day in bed with you if you feel like it!!

The downfalls to the hostel are lack of windows in the rooms and no cooking facilities which we were not expecting. A good base if you need to catch up on sleep but otherwise I would look for somewhere closer to the centre.

“A terrible experience.”

This hostel was advertised as 'boutique style', but this was far from the truth. We booked a double room which was basically just a small double mattress on the floor. The room had no window and it was so small that we had to put our luggage on the end of the bed. The building itself is basically an extension onto a residential building, it is a lot like a garage.

The bathrooms and kitchen were basically in the same room, and there were not anywhere near enough showers. One day we had to wait in a queue for over 2 hours to take a shower.

We had to give them a $50 room deposit which they decided to keep at the end of the stay because they said we had a lot of luggage. This just seemed odd? We had no idea that bringing 1 small suitcase each was considered a lot of luggage?

On our second morning there we found we had been bitten a lot. They were not mosquito bites, I don't know what they were? When we told the receptionist (who was cooking as usual) we got shouted at and she swore at us.

When we enquired about getting a refund on the rest of the weeks stay we were told that it was not possible. If we wanted to stay somewhere else then tough luck, they would keep the money for all 7 nights stay. The receptionist then shouted at us and told us that we were being disruptive.

To top things all off during our stay we noticed that the cats litter box was rarely changed. Whilst we have a cat ourselves, we did not appreciate finding that the cat had decided to do things elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

“One word: Cramped”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

It was a rush preparation that left me very few choices besides One Florence Close. And there are pros and cons of this little hut in Kovan, far away from Central Singapore, and here they are:

PROS
- Friendly staff
- Walking distance to MRT Station, surrounded by local restaurants that are good and economic choices. There is a traditional bread cafe called JIE, at which we had breakfasts every morning during our stay. It's cheap, delicious and very local.
- Well-equipped for basic needs: clean beds, good internet (during my stay I had no problem with wi-fi), there are TVs in the rooms, not that you want to watch though. There are many cutlery, kitchenware, coffee and tea for guests.
- There is a desktop here for use, with many maps and tourist information available.
- There is a 'freebies corner' here, with books, magazines and other stuff free to take away. Probably leftovers by previous guests.

CONS
- Very far away from Central Singapore. It's MRT-connected, but MRT is very expensive.
- By "Shared bathroom" it means sharing three shower cabinets and two toilets with guests in the other 11 rooms. They look clean but it's really not comfortable to use something so "public".
- Basins are in the common area, so you have to brush your teeth in the public.
- Rooms are terribly small! I stayed in the first room right after the gate, and it's barely spacious enough for a double-deck bed, a wardrobe and a desk. I passed by other rooms and reckon they are even smaller, barely enough for a double mattress!

To conclude, I would say there are a lot more choices out there, and there is no point to pick this one when 1- it requires lots of transportation, 2- it's not particularly comfortable!

Room Tip: The first room, opposite to reception.

“Bed bugs, dirty hostel and rude staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

This places is basically a garage like extension to a house. The bathrooms were very dirty the whole time that I stayed and the whole place had a bad smell to it. The location is quite far from central Singapore compared to other places to stay. The internet did not work for the entire time I spent at the hostel.

After the first few nights I discovered lots of bites on me but just guessed it must be from outside. However, later on in my stay I noticed lots of black marks on the bedding. It was obvious this place had bed bugs, I asked some other people who were staying about it and it turned out everyone I asked had been bitten.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

“Lovely stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2011

Would defntly go back ! My bf and i stayed there in double room, early April. Easy to get around. Quiet & Clean. Nice mattress & linen. Good for couples. Trustworthy guests and maid. Met COOLEST PPL! Lovely cat (we love pets) Nice shower though the lock didnt work so great but everyone was considerate and respectful there. 7-11 and food court is just across the street. Heartland mall is 5 min walk away, right on top of Kovan MRT station actually.

Weird thing was it was fully booked 3 days before we checked in (so we were stuck in crappy one on Kallang rd. no single night of good sleep there) but last minute we were able to nail it down even for 4 nights! Wi-fi didnt work but they provided LAN line which worked awesomely. Own keys. Small room but hey, its a hostel not a condo! high ceiling defntly helped though. Aircon there cooled your day down in a snap. and If ur sociable enough, try meet the whole hostel guests by sitting outside on the porch w some beer in the evening! thats how we got to meet and talk to very interesting ppl from all around the world!
