“Dark, atmospheric and deep in the heart of Chinatown.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wife loves this place, largely because of its location, hard by the wonders and smells of Chinatown. This was our second stay in 2 years and will be again as we transit Singapore onto Oz and NZ. Although there were some signs of tiredness with the decor, after we asked for a room change,(too small for what we paid-deluxe rate) the reception staff were very helpful, and moved us as soon as another became available. Avoid room 220 and ask for 227,............ quite a different experience. After booking out 3 days later, our flight was some 5 hours away back to the UK, but the staff gave us the use of a courtesy room on the 4th floor, and this is where all the best apartments are!
Singapore is a revelation, and this is my 5th visit over 40 years. The people are very proud of their island state and English is widely and beautifully spoken. Little India, Harbourside, River Godowns, Orchid Road and Chinatown itself provide a feast for the eyes (and stomach). Try the delights of Lau Tau market, Suntech or Maxwell for culinary treats, but don't miss the chilli crab in Smith Street (also known as Cook Street) for a goumet experience! Enjoy!

Room Tip: 227 rather than 220.

“Now booking a hotel in Singapore is easy for us :-)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Usually we are very picky when we are looking for a hotel to stay. We are more interested in boutique style hotels that have an own character than a typical four/five star hotel from a big chain. That’s why it usually take a lot of time to research until we finally book a hotel.
The Scarlet made it easy for us in Singapore: it is so good in its price category that we do not have to do any research anymore when we are in Singapore: we just book this hotel :-).

When you enter the hotel you notice it is different than the usual four/five star hotel. Friendly, professional knowledgeable staff welcomes you. The interior looks … sexy in a good sense of the word.

The rooms are clean and even their smallest room is already quite large. They have a restaurant on the roof top, a bar and a small Jacuzzi. There is even a gym and of course free WiFi. Breakfast is priced like every four/five star hotel in Singapore but the good thing of The Scarlet is its location: next to it lies the Maxwell Food Court (our favourite food court in Singapore) and across the road are plenty of restaurants in China Town. The MRT is just a few minutes away so you can quickly move around Singapore.

We are looking forward to our next stay in The Scarlet :-).

Room Tip: More money spend on a room means a bigger room. Even the basic room has already a lot of comfort com...

“Staycation successful”

We were jonesing to get out of town, but had basically no time--so we did a Saturday night at the Scarlett. We got a great rate on Agoda--I think $157SGD/night, with breakfast included. We had a great dinner up at the alfresco restaurant, which is also where breakfast was served. Our room had a lot of personality, which is what we expected from this boutique hotel. Before they remodeled the downstairs, we were walking by and saw some very erotic paintings in the former restaurant...we were shocked they were hanging in public in Singapore! The bed was really comfortable, the toiletries were fashionable, and TV was good. There were some nifty unique touches in the room, such as books about the hotel, slippers, bathrobes, etc. The service was lacking--I thought the lady up front was rude when we checked in, and they didn't allow wiggle-room on late checkout at all, but whatever. The other downside is there's no pool--just a little dip pool, which was ok. But, you are right near Maxwell Food Center and Club Street--our intention was to go out on the town but we were so tired after dinner, we just retired to our comfortable room. This is definitely a couples hotel. I wouldn't really want to stay there if I were on business or single and not with family either. It just puts off a sexy vibe that isn't for everyone.

Room Tip: Beware discount rooms--ours was tucked in the back corner and had a sloped roof. We enjoyed it none...

“A cozy luxury retreat from the bustle of Chinatown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Whlle the rooms are small, they are well-equipped, and quiet sufficient. I like the decor and the 'luxury' elements. I have stayed here twice, and enjoy the retreat from the bustle of the city. The roof top restaurant offers a peaceful location for drinks or dinner.

“Twice not bitten therefore we're not shy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

It was our 2nd stay in Scarlet. On both occassions, it was to celebrate my husband's birthday.

I guess this hotel is not for everyone. If you are very particular about room size, surroundings, nice view from the windows, convenient parking, pool and facilities then Scarlet is not for you.

On both occassions, the front desk staff brought us up to the room and even carried our bags. After unlocking the door, they navigated us around the room.

Being a boutique hotel, the hotel have compensated by providing a great service and a comfy room perfect for a romantic night stay. The beddings, the furnishings and the lightings definitely adds to the mood. On both stays, we received a personal-size complimentary birthday cake.

We were definitely not twice bitten therefore not twice shy. Will look forward to staying there again for a romantic night's stay.

Cheers,
Marina + Johaness
