We were originally booked into the other YMCA but found out that it was fully booked. The travel agent told us that it was very central and included breakfast which was an added bonus. It took roughly forty minutes from the airport costing around 25 Singapore Dollars. The outside looked ok, had to walk up steps in order to enter. There is a desk on your right where I noticed that they offered a complementary free shuttle bus to Orchard Road - one way and at selected times. This service was definitely going to be used ;-). Went over to the counter, asked to fill in a form and was asked that we put down 50 Singapore Dollars for security measures. As recommended by our travel agent he said for the two of us we would only need equivalent to 1500 Hong Kong Dollars as we were going back to Hong Kong. We were recommended to change money in HK beforehand. The rate we got was for every 1 Singapore Dollar equated to 6 HK Dollars. I went with my cousin and she thought that she would change a little bit more so we ended up with 350 Singapore Dollars considering that we were only there for 3 days. We only had 275 due to hotel deposit and taxi. We were on the second floor - we walked past a free diapenser of cold and hot water. Got to the room as it was spacious. The washroom consisted of a shower, toilet and sink. You got a shower cap, two glasses and dispenser for handsoap and another in the shower. The shower had a ceiling showerhead and another showerhead for portable use. We were supplied with two towels and a floor towel with an extra toilet roll and a bin. There was two big sliding doors, the first one was spacious along with four clothes hangers. The other one was same size along with a fridge, safe and four more clothes hangers and extra blanket and pillow. The view looked out towards the car park and road. The tv was flat screened and had a welcome message. The beds were comfortable but I noticed that along the side where the kettle was, it was dusty along with someones hair!!! On one of the bath towels there was a long strand of hair too!!! The air con was to standard too. Overall the room was adequate for our purposes. One thing which I must point out was that there was another added bonus in that I was able to use the hotels Wifi - therefore extra research on Singapore and checking on line could be done. As we got there about 7pm we thought that we would get something to eat down Orchard Road. The receptionist advised us to catch the number 190 which is four stops away. One thing which is needed is that you need to mKe sure you have the right change as the bus does not give out change. The bus stop was less than a minute away :-) As we didn't know about the change scenario I asked on the bus if anyone had change. A nearby person managed to change a 5 Singapore Dollar as it cost 1 SD each. The bus dropped us outside Far East Plaza which was in middle of Orchard Road and within distance to the SMTR. As we didn't know where to catch the bus back we thought that it would be quite easy considering that the bus took 5 minutes. It was straightforward as it's one road down but lead to a few snags - Singapore was very muggy therefore it's not recommended as it took us about half an hour- had to shower as the sweat was dripping off (Good for diet reasons ;-)) next time we would be catching bus back!!!
Breakfast was at a certain time, it was on groundfloor. It was all self service. Tea and coffee along with evaporated milk. There were fresh fruit, ham, cheese and salad. For the British in us there were frankfurter sausages, fried eggs and even bake beans. To cater for Asian people there were Congee (rice soup). There were two kinds of cereals too. Also there were crossaints along with sachets of portions of jam and butter.
All in all the hotel was suitable for our needs. The location I felt was a little bit out of the centre, the other YMCA is nearer. Check in time is 12pm while checkout is 1pm. On the last day off check out you get returned your 50SD which came in handy. As we had a late flight we asked if we can leave our luggage until later they obliged. Went towards Orchard Road via free hotel shuttlebus for last minute buys. Make sure that you visit the night safari, unfortunately we didn't go to the zoo but if you visit all three sites - Zoo-Night Safari & Bird Paradise you can get a good ticket price (48SD I think!)
went on Singapore Flyer just like London Eye but with different buildings of course. On a good day you can see the Merlion and LittleIndia which we did. From there we walked to the Merlion which took about twenty minutes. One thing which is good about Singapore is that you can walk to all these places if you have the patience (Be warned it's tiring and you will sweat buckets!) Also you have to have a Singapore Sling at Raffles before you go home-it's very traditional with woven chairs. One thing which I thought was strange was that there were a box of complimentary peanuts with no bowl for shells, later found out that you just dump them on the floor - felt odd as I felt it was wrong to dump on floor!!! Last thing which had to be done was to sample the local food of Chilli Crab - delicious!!!!!
