I have stay-cationed a couple of times at this Starwood property using my points and cash. It is an oldish property but I request - and was granted - the renovated rooms which were nice, spacious and offer good views. I turned down an upgrade to the "cabana" suites near the pool which need a LOT of refurbishing and look a bit dated and dinghy. There is considerable noise during the day time due to renovations, so if you are planning to be in the hotel then watch out and ask for a room far from the noise. If you are on business or out sightseeing the whole day then this is moot.
The location is good and bad - depends on your perspective. It is very close to CBD and if you are here on business or pleasure, and willing to take the train, it is close to the Newston MRT (subway) which will get you into the CBD areas of Raffles Place and Marina Bay hassle free. Taxis are of course another option. This means it is in a slightly quieter part of town but close to the 'action'. If you like shopping, or a hotel set amidst a more active area with malls, pubs, restaurants, food courts and the like, this is not for you - although all those will be accessible through a short cab ride. The dining options walkable from the hotel are limited in terms of restaurants (and also a bit pricey) but it is ALSO close to the Newton hawker center, which has good - if touristy - food offerings.
I did not use the gym, but had a view of the pool which seemed decent enough.
If you plan to hang around the room a bit, please note that the TV options are dismal - the poorest offering I have seen, with only free to air and some international news and entertainment channels like CNN, BBC, Asie Monde, Deutsche Welle, Arirang and Australian network. If you have young ones and want HBO Family or any other mainstream choices, tough luck. This part of course was unfortunate for a stay-cationer like me interested in staying in the room and chilling out much of the time.
Service staff is pleasant enough. Overall, a decently priced Starwood property that will suit a certain profile of traveller who wants to be mostly out during the day, has limited TV preferences and is willing to be just a bit out of the main shopping and CBD area but with the option of getting there relatively quickly.
