“Excellent Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed overnight to attend a friend's wedding. The hotel staff was extremely sincere in their service standards. Real smiles and genuine in providing quality service, Eg, orienting us at Melt Buffet to the various available counters. Explaining the food which was served with pride. When I asked for the Gents, they even walked me there.

The ambience was good overall and privacy kept in check. The dim lights of the hotel also proved to have a relaxing effect on my and my partner. Check out Morton's Steakhouse when you are there. Prices of steak at from SGD 98 and above but are worth every single cent of it.

I will definately return to Mandarin Oriental as my choice of stay if I can find another excuse to pamper myself!

For parents with children, they have a kids room which is simple yet cosy. Its located near the Morton's bar where you can have a chat with friends knowing your kids are taken care of.

“Very Rude Receptionist”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

Stayed there for the second time this month. Everything is great; perfect location, fairly good rooms (albeit a bit aging now) and of course a great location.

However, the killer for me was one of the receptionists called Nadya. Extremely rude and unfriendly, she totally ignored me and turned her head even though she wasn't serving anyone else. When i asked if anyone else could help me, she said NO in a very rude manner and turned her ahead away. I was finally served by someone else.

Really killed my experience. I normally stay at the St. Regis, but sadly they were full on this occasion. Amazing how one staff can ruin your experience. Won't be going back.

“Over rated and over hyped”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Let me get this straight - MO Singapore is a good hotel. But that's just it. It is not exceptional in any sense. The best thing here is the breakfast. The buffet menu is the largest I've ever seen and food is awesome. You name it and they have it in their b'fast menu.
But apart from that, MO is just as good as any other 5* hotel anywhere else in this world. The service is decent (had to remind them a couple of time for certain issues to get them resolved). The staff is friendly with a smile always on their face but that is what they're supposed to do.
I've stayed in other 5* hotels and I found the service and amenities far better than what MO has to offer.
The rooms are small and dated. Bed was comfortable. Items in the Mini bar are ridiculously over priced ($9 for a coke can !! ) and so are other food items and services. The problem is not money, it's the wastage of money. Just because a property is 5* doesn't mean it has to inflate cost of every single thing. Better get your coke cans and mineral water from the Marina Square mall which is linked to the hotel. You've to pay for the internet.
I probably had too much expectations after reading all the reviews at TA but I was not impressed. It's just average.
Am I coming back? Only after trying all other hotels in Singapore :)

Room Tip: Ask for a harbor view room. The higher the better.

“5 star...really???”

I am sure this hotel is great, but they sure did ruin my 1 night stay.
PROS:
1. Location is really convenient to a cheap mall for some quick purchases
2. The management staff are very well trained. Very proactive, jump in to help guests. However, th front line staff are horrible
3. Housekeeping is terrific. They do a miracle to make this old hotel look like very clean and fresh.
4. Room service was great. We ordered indina food. The desserts are to die for. Must try - pecan brownie with their home made vanilla ice cream
5. I see many comments about the breakfast at Melt. But i didnt think it was special. Lots of variety, but everytime i took out a plate to get some food, the plate would be dirty! but variety is definitely very good.
6. The bed was beautiful. I have not slept so comfortably in years!
7. The view from the harbour rooms is very nice. You see the amazing sands resort to the left and the entire singapore skyline on the right.
6. And thats about it!

CONS:
1. Check in: the lady was very pleasent, but she got everythign wrong. Firstly i wanted to pay by debit card for the incidentals. She said they would just note down my details and not charge. Later in the day i get a call from the reception that they wil have to charge me the entire room rate + $200 immediately. It is strange that i am expected to pay the entire room rate a day before i checkout!! I have stayed at several hotels around the world and paid with debit cards. The hotel will generally take the incidentals and on checkout, they will return in cash. The room rate is never charged at check in. Worst thing was when i asked to speak to a manager (because the person who called me was hopelessly lost) terrance called me and pretty much regurgitated the "hotel policy". What happened to the famous mandarin oriental service!
2. The front desk lady very politely asked me if i wanted the newspaper. I asked for the business times and as i write this review from the hotel room at 9 am, no newspaper yet
3. The room is tiny! I would say about 25 square meters. For $550 that is a shame.
4. The room itself is aging. The hotel interiors are nice till the 4th floor, where all the restaurants are. Very tired on the floors with the rooms.
5. Pool staff speak no english. The waiter had me open the menu and point to the pina colada so that he could write it down in his pad. The manager at the pool is terrific. Pity his staff let him down.
6. The bathroom in the room has no door to the WC area. And there is no sound proofing, which can be embarrassing even if you are staying with your wife.
7. There was a large group of tourists at the lobby last evening, and they just sat all around the lobby. I had to fight my way through to get to the lifts. The hotel staff just stood there watching, instead of guiding the guests away to some private area.
8. I am sure that this is a safety code violation, that the hair dryer in the room is within easy distance of the bath tub. I am an architect and i was very surprised that a hotel of his calibre would overlook someing like this.

All in all, i think the mandarin oriental is still going strong only because of their management. They clearly do not have front line staff of the same calibre. The hotel is getting old and worn down. Do yourself a favor, stay at one of the newer hotels, and there are plenty of those to chose from in singapore.
