“Excellent place if you kitesurf or windsurf or just don't want to stay on crowded White beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

We loved the place and hardly moved from Bulabog beach to the way too crowded White Beach. We stayed 2 weeks in Surfers Home, the nicest staff, the owner Kathrin is very welcoming and organises everything what you can think of. We wanted to get picked up from Kalibo, we wanted a birthday cake, islandhooping- just mention it and the team organises everything you ask for. when we were there, Surfers Home just received new Stand up paddle boards, which the guest can use 2 hours in the morning for free. For us the best- no breakfasttimes- once a day you can eat for free. Rooms are very detailed equipped with nice bamboobeds and lovely kitepics on the walls. there a cocks of the neighbours, but i guess, there is no place on the whole island , where you dont hear them screaming. we recommend to stay there, if you are happy to meet other kiters and want to surf together or if you want to escape from white beach crowd

“Overall - Very poor indeed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

The good:
All day breakfast. Food good.
Pleasant staff.
Right next to the kitesurfing beach.

The bad:
An owner that does not care about her guests - the place is a cash cow
The beds are disgusting. Despite clean sheets, the mattresses are filthy and very thin. The beds are cheap rubbish and they are VERY uncomfortable.
Bugs. The cottages are infested with some kind of burrowing worm and they frequently fall onto the beds and your stuff (if they fall on you in the night they bite). The product of there burrowing (faecal matter?) also is a constant problem. There are gaps in the roof so cockroaches, mosquitos and one very large (4 inches across) spider get in. The mosquito nets are not up to the task. We burned coils each night to fend them off.
Expense. The owner arranges for her driver to pick you up from the airport. Then it turns out you get hit with a 850 Peso bill (that you were not told about).
Filth. The walls and bathroom and anywhere not obvious are filthy. Cleaning is done only on a superficial basis (ie a sweep out of sand / change of towels and sheets).
Noise. There is a workshop next door that provides constant banging. Late night partying too (though it was Xmas). Lots of caged cockerills to wake you up early in the morning.

This place, despite being low end was not worth the money. It was not relaxing and the owner (Katherin?) has not put any money back into the business to improve the conditions. Overall, this was an uncomfortable two weeks.

“Relaxing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2010

We were there for a week... good way to start vacation. No complications... great staff... just relaxing. Little walk from Surfer home to white beach ( 5 minutes)...or take a tricycle they are everywhere and not expensive. Most of the drivers are friendly. But ...avoid at all cost the "Bat's Cave" the guides overthere will do everything possible to "rip off " you... what supposed to be a donation ( 50 to 100 Pesos) become 1000 to 2000 Pesos price tag if you are not carefull. Enjoy your vacation.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

We stayed for two weeks at Surfers Home. We chose that hotel as it is directly at the Kitesurf Beach (Bulabog Beach) and we went to Boracay for kitesurfing. The hotel has a nice garden with a little restaurant which serves breakfast and drinks. Breakfast was excellent, included in the room rate, and we could choose whatever was on the menu. Breakfast was served even after 12pm.

At our arrival, the german owner Kathrin was attending a Kitesurf competition in Vietnam. The other staff told us that the hotel was fully booked and that we are being transferred to another hotel. We booked our room two months in advance. After one night, when the owner was back, we could finally move to Surfers Home.

The rooms were okay. Ours had a double bed, private bathroom with hot water, a nice balcony, fridge, TV and a fan (no Air-con). The room were not so clean, even though they got cleaned every day. At one day, we discovered a big mold under the soap dish which must have bloomed there for several days.

There are some things about the hotel to mention. The mattress was extremly thin so you basically were lying on the wood beneath. Quite a hard sleeping experience. Water pressure was so low, that we didn't have water if someone else was having a shower. The area was quite noisy, we had to use ear plugs to be able to sleep.
We wouldn't return to Surfers Home. What we disliked the most was that we got the impression that the owner didn't really care about her guests. For example, she preferred washing her dog first rather then taking care about us when we told her about being transferred to the other hotel for the first night. After talking to other kitesurfers, we are pretty confident that there are many places with a better value near Bulabog Beach.

“Great little place away from the crowd”

Me and a friend stayed here for 5 nights, and we just love it! Great price, great staff, great view and lovely bungalows. We love the location where you don't always see lots of people so it's more relaxing to us. There are tricycles for hire just steps away, so it's super easy to get around.
And the locals are extremely friendly and helpful, makes the whole trip unforgettable!
