“Quiet secluded place away from the bustle of Boracay”

My friends and I stayed in the Mulligan Golf Hotel (which is part of the Fairways and Blue Waters Resort) from March 27 - 29, 2007. We stayed because a friend's brother gave us the chance to use his timeshare there in Fairways and Blue Waters.

The hotel was lovely and quiet. The entire hotel was peaceful. There were no crowds there (perhaps it was before the start of the Holy Week) in the hotel. It's because it seems a bit exclusive. Though we were told that the Mulligan Golf Hotel has been opened to the public.

The beds were firm and there was a small kitchenette--with kitchen sink, coffee maker, cups and drinking glasses; though no microwave oven or stove. There was no bath tub but the shower stall was adequate. There was no great view from the balcony of the room. Just the road towards the main club house (where the front desk is located). I kept sneezing when I was there because the carpet seemed a bit dusty. Whenever I walked barefoot across the room fresh from the shower, the soles of my feet turned brown from the dust.

There were some downside to the service. First, the tea and coffee were not replenished on our second day. When we checked-in, they knew there were three of us and we were told that there were two beds. But we were reassured that the bed would be large enough for 2 people so it's up to us to decide if we want to add a third bed. When
we went to the room, there wasn't enough space for a third single bed. It was good that my two friends were content to share the double-size bed. Second, though the hotel staff knew in advance there were three of us staying in the room, the room wasn't prepared for three people. We had to ask for extra bathrobe and towels since there were only two pairs of robes and towels. Lastly, the toiletries were not that special (run-of-the-mill) and were only for one person (on the day of the check-in). Though we've used up the toiletries, they weren't replenished the next day. We had to constantly call up the housekeeping to ask for such things.

I knew that the hotel was far from the happening place in Boracay (White Beach area) but there was supposed to be a free shuttle service. It was only for going to places inside the resort. There was a fee for getting a ride out of the hotel to the restaurants and bars in the White Beach. It was quite expensive to take the shuttle. We were better off taking the public transportation (tricycles) but as usual we had to haggle with the drivers since they tend to jack up the price for tourists (even local tourists like us). We eventually learned that it's better to flag down a passing tricycle which is going towards the direction where we want to go. If we took the tricycle which is parked anywhere, they'll charge a higher price (which they say is chartered price). But still, the shuttle price is much more higher.

Though the resort itself was north east of Boracay Island's famous White Beach, there was a private beach. There were times that there was just me and my friends on the beach (though there were the occasional workers clearing out some debris). There were cabanas on the beach where we can stay. And when we wanted something else, there was the swimming pool. Though it's just basic swimming pool (not that fancy looking).

All in all, it seems that people check-in the hotel to play golf and not to enjoy the White Beach.

  • Liked — quiet place, secure, has private beach
  • Disliked — expensive shuttle service to outside places (should be free)
  • Stayed March 2007, travelled with friends
