This hotel is located in South Jakarta behind the Blok M shopping mall. It is on a relatively quiet side street and rooms at the back have good views back towards the centre on the city.

This was our first stay in a Sofitel hotel and I was excited to try a new hotel chain. Our first impressions were good. The lobby is very opulent and check-in was quick.

Our room was pleasantly furnished, well maintained and very clean. It was on the small side but had all the amenities you would expect of a five star hotel.

The swimming pool is located on the 6th floor and is very small but nice anyway, due to it's good views out over the city. Problems came when we wanted towels however. It took 2 requests to different staff members and a phone call for these to be produced.

We had another problem when we ordered room service. The chefs' special selection was sold out. It seems strange that a hotel would sell out of dish they are specifically advertising on a flyer in every room before dinner but, after some persuasion, they did agree to give us a higher priced menu item for the same price.The order was delivered quickly.

All in all, although I enjoyed my stay, I am not sure I would choose to stay at this hotel again. The hotel looks impressive but, for the price service is a little lacking.

Hotel looks pleasant and european from the outside. Inside all marble, beautiful flower arrangements, small balconies etc etc.
Staff very helpful. I was sharing with a girlfriend, twin beds and we had a small overstuffed chair. Not huge but enough space. Bathroom very clean and modern. Lovely cafe/bar on ground floor with nightly live singer and piano player... great for relaxing. Just across street is western style pizza place... very tasty. Down the road is Mega Pix Diamond Theatre/Cinema great value at $5 to watch a movie in a reclining chair and blanket. Plaza Senayan Up market mall, nearby as is cheaper Pasa Raya and Blok M for copies. I would definitely stay here again.

The building looks very nice from the outside, but once you're inside it's a whole different story : old school decor, cheap equipment, little facilities.

Jakarta hotels operate in a challenging envirnoment as meticulous hospitality has occasionally been overtaken by terrorist outrages. A hotel is only as good as the people in it and the Gran Mahakam has heart. Even if communication can sometimes be difficult, something good shines through that words dont describe. Some critics would rate a hotel on the plush of the carpet or the furniture in the room. Stay at the Gran Mahakam, let your misunderstandings turn to appreciation and realise that its all about people.
