I had problems with my agoda booking when I arrived- wasn't registered, even though agoda is a prepaid system. Though it is probably not the hotel's fault, their response was underwhelming. First I had to wait (no issue really), then they didn't have available rooms (ok, not anyone's fault), then I couldn't get into the room they finally gave me with the issued keycard (slight annoyance), then they gave me a new room. I had asked for a smoking room, but ventilation was not good (I know it's a contradiction, but us smokers want good ventilating rooms). At this point the agoda problem was still unresolved.
The next day early in the morning at the reception counter I asked for a change to a non-smoking room, and I confirmed I had packed my belongings to facilitate easy transfer. By evening when I returned to the hotel I was not moved. Again some waiting. The same guy who dealt with my check-in night's agoda confusion did not update me on whether it was solved. No apologies for ANYTHING up to this point (I wasn't expecting a personal apology, just one on behalf of the hotel, those kinds that soothes feelings).
From the 2 rooms I had stayed in, and the general impressions of the hotel - The rooms were of decent sizes, and of the standard room design from 90s ~ 00s(dark stained wood finishing, CRT tvs etc). The staff were generally friendly. Ventilation needed to be better. Some linen was off-white. The elevator carpets had black patches. The inner parts(ceramic?) of the bath tubs were peeling. The bath towels couldn't dry properly (material? ventilation? etc) so I couldn't really do the whole "save the environment..." thing. The faucets & showerheads shot off rusty water for the first few seconds. The toilet exhaust fan was noticeably loud. Wifi was only available in the lobby. LAN was slow.
I realise for a personal review to be objective one must not confuse a 3 star with a 5 star expectations. If I knew that I paid for a 3 star and expected 3 star but I got 5 star service then I should push this tripadvisor rating higher. If I paid 1 dollar a night for these rooms then I suppose I could live with those things I wrote above, and I could even put in 5 points. I should have to judge this hotel as a property comparable to similar properties in a particular city & country without weighing in too much on what is it in different countries with different value structures.
Ultimately though, this is an aging property with ok rooms and ok service, just all too average. In the Accor group I have stayed in much better Mercures.
