“Screwed up service”

We stayed in the hotel two separate periods. The first period (2/8/10 - 4/8/10) and the second period (9/8/10) after we came back from EBC.

The first period when we stayed was okay. The room given to us was small and they had to squeeze in an extra bed into the already small room leaving us little space to move around.

The second period where we stayed for one night was horrible. We had already confirmed a room for a night weeks before (via our tour agent) but when we wanted to check-in, we were told all the rooms were fully booked and our reservation was NOT IN THEIR SYSTEM AT ALL! After a long wait from 8am till 11am we were then given a room another family had withdrawn. The hotel told us that was the only room avail at that time and the room's air-conditioning was faulty. The hotel staff told us to take it or leave it. We had no choice but to stay in that room. We waited UNTIL 1PM to be able to check into the hotel room.

There was a small fan provided in the room which made loud noises. The hotel knew we had 3 people staying in and didnt even bother to provide an additional bed! 2 of us had to squeeze into a small tiny bed. The room was so hot and stuffy at night and none of my family members could get a good rest. Even the hotel corridor was much cooler than the hotel room.

BUT THIS WAS NOT THE END!
When 3 of us were consuming the buffet breakfast included in the room at morning, we were pestered by the staff stating that we ought to pay up for the additional person consuming the breakfast, as their records indicate that our room had only two guest!?!! I was outraged and asked the hotel to confirm with the frontdesk, because the hotel staff already told us when we checked in that breakfast for ALL THREE WAS INCLUDED already! The same Male Staff pestered us THRICE and DEMANDED US TO PAY UP! It was so ridiculous, why would we want to cheat the hotel of a mere 30YUAN by having and additional person consuming breakfast and not paying?? We finally got our tour guide to settle the issue at the frontdesk and it was the frontdesk who had not take not of our arrangement DESPITE US HAVING ALREADY PAID THE FULL 3 PERSON AMOUNT! The rude Male Staff and the people at the Frontdesk were UNAPOLOGETIC and shoo us off.

From what i observed, the same male staff treated western guests as if they were made of gold, listening to their explanation. Same goes for the frontdesk. The frontdesk was very very very rude and unresponsive, and extremely good at playing dumb when it comes to attending to guests who are chinese, or look like chinese.

We did not receive any refund, apologies or any form of compensation for the POOR SERVICE, RACIST TREATMENT AND LOUSY REJECTED ROOM we got when in fact we had already confirmed a hotel booking more than a week in advance, and even a confirmation from the hotel that a room has been reserved the day before. The treatment we got from the hotel was just totally unacceptable even if it is of one star standard. Looking through all the reviews posted on bad service, it seems that the hotel doesn't give a damn on it's service. I would hence like to warn all tripadvisor viewers and give it a second thought if you intend to book.

If you are looking for a hotel to spoil your holiday in beautiful Tibet, this is the one.

I would give it ZERO STARS if that had been an option.

Quentin,
Singapore

“Location, location, location...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

Three nights Location is THE big advantage -- 5-minute walk to Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Bazaar. Awesome ! Breakfast quite good -- especially the yak butter ! Nearby Lhasa Restaurant 3 minutes away also good place to eat. Needed ear plugs because of construction noise and talking in courtyard below room. Internet cafe in courtyard at front is a nice respite and inexpensive computers. Ask for "The English One". Remember that this IS Tibet when making comparisons. Don't expect same level as elsewhere. Location, location, location !

“Excellent location but unbelievably noisy”

My friends and I stayed at Shangbala for three nights. Luckily we had rooms next to each other, because the walls were so thin we could literally hold conversations with one another through the bathroom walls. My friends' bathroom had a jacuzzi but the tub didn't really drain. Our rooms faced an apartment complex, and we could hear dogs barking, the garbage truck, people returning home, etc. The air conditioner didn't work, so we had to leave the windows open and further subject ourselves to noise all night long.

That said, the staff are very helpful, the breakfast is decent, and the location is superb. If we had been heavier sleepers, I'm sure we would have enjoyed the hotel much more. The rooms were comfortable and clean enough. I'm therefore torn on my recommendation - I selected 'no' for someone like me who expects a bit more from a 3-star hotel. However, proper backpackers or people who attach less value to their sleep should certainly consider Shangbala.

“Beware, my bed was full of bed bugs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2010

Although the room seemed clean, I woke up the next morning with bed bug bites on my legs, back, shoulders and arms. It takes up to 9 days for bed bug bites to appear. I ended up with over 100 bites on my body. Our tour operator filed a complaint form and the hotel replied that they had many clients with the same problem (yikes!) The way they handle it is exchange rooms (in our case the hotel was fully booked) and provide ointment. How about disposing of the bug infested bed! I hope my reporting this experience will save some travelers from the same misfortune. On another note, I would recommend that you take some medicine with you regarding altitude sickness. Although my husband and I travelled to Lhasa by train, we still had headaches, off and on, during our stay. On a positive note, the people, the tours, restaurants (Dunya, Snowlands and Sumitt Café), the Barkhor and landscapes were wonderful.

“poor hotel in good location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010
1
person found this review helpful

Disagreeable staff, poor water pressure on the second floor, a dribble of tepid water from the shower head, rock-hard beds needing 3 comforter pads to be tolerable, poor western breakfast with items not replaced when depleted, strange people attempting to access our room--these are just a sampling of the problems with this hotel. The location is great for local color; however, the problems greatly outweigh the locale.
