“Soulless Chinese Business Hotel”

Our tour company originally booked us into the Lhasa Hotel for our three night stay in Lhasa. However, after doing some research on the internet including reading the TA reviews, we decided against their choice and opted for a small boutique hotel in the Old Town. Our reservation was cancelled at the last minute by the boutique hotel and we were re-booked into the Lhasa Hotel. All our initial instincts were proved to be correct; The Lhasa Hotel is a big, shiny, show-off of a hotel with no substance and absolutely no atmosphere. Our room looked out over a central atrium which housed the Four Seasons restaurant which we never saw open. Consequently, there was no fresh air if you opened the window and the room was always dark & gloomy. When adjusting to altitude, the lack of fresh air at night severely hampers your sleep. There was cigarette ash on the carpet in the corner of our room and it stunk of smoke. There is no bath in any of the rooms apart from the suits, just a shower cubicle which is separated from the bedroom by a clear glass screen. Great if you want to watch each other on the loo! The staff were mostly unfriendly, especially on the front reception and in the Yak Cafe restaurant. We only ever saw this one restaurant open and it had absolutely no ambiance, especially at night. Given that the food was awful, I can understand why! One morning we arrived 10 mins before the close of breakfast to find that everything had already been cleared away. There is a pool in the garden area which was empty and a man made river running through the landscaping that was full of stagnant water - not a pleasant place to spend time. In fact, there was no pleasant place to spend time. If you are in Lhasa for business, a conference or a wedding reception, the Lhasa Hotel ticks all the boxes. If, however, your visit to Lhasa is to experience the culture, history and hospitality of the wonderful Tibetan people, this hotel is not for you. Stay in the old town where you can fully experience this truly enchanting City.

“Nice Hotel, Big & Quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

It was very quiet during our stay at the Lhasa Hotel in April 2010, as in, the hotel is very large and there were very few people there. The large restaurants were empty and the staff were sitting in the dark - when we entered, they quickly greated us and turned on the lights...I think they had to round up the chef to cook our dinner which was very good. There were a few more people at breakfast - the food wasn't too bad.

The room we had was your basic room c/w typical hard beds. The mini fridge was handi for beverages. There is O2 in the room if needed.

The hotel seems well located but you'll need to take a cab to get to the Potala Palace and old town.

Although I didn't use the spa / massage facilities, it looked nice and the staff was ready and offered to provide whatever service you wanted :)

“Watch our for the construction work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

Let me start by saying that this is the only hotel I stayed at in Lhasa. While it is clear that it does not attain Western standards, I did not experience any of the negative issues described in other reviews. I stayed in two rooms on the fifth floor and they were both more than OK. The staff spoke fluent English and was generally helpful. The only huge problem I had was the construction going on through the night just in front of my window, and this every night expect one night when it rained. If you stay at this hotel, make sure the construction has been completed or else avoid it altogether.

“Avoid this hotel!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

Awful hotel! The lobby is beautiful and deceiving. The pool is an empty basin, the grounds have nomads camped in them with grazing sheep, the rooms are pitiful with unrepaired water leak stains on the wallpaper, the airconditioning and hair dryer don't work, the carpets are never hoovered. We coudn't order a meal outside main meal times, the tea house does not have an english menu or staff who can offer any ideas on ordering. The worst breakfast I have ever eaten in any hotel in the world - the remnants of lunch and breakfast are recycled - the toast is ice cold, rock hard and had mould on it after 3 days. The tea and coffee were undrinkable, the juice was made from concentrate. Most food was cold and stale. Reception staff are friendly, but this does not make up for the hotel.
