“Small, Small, Small!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

From other reviews here on tripadvisor I knew my room was going to be small, but I had no idea exactly how small it was going to be. It was tiny. I had a single bed and on the first night I actually fell out of the bed. Besides being small the other thing that bothered me was that the shower curtain was too small that the entire bathroom floor would get wet. But the biggest issue I had with the place was that it was cold. In Feb temperatures in Hong Kong can drop to the low 50s at night. With one wall in a small room being glass that was quite drafty the room was freezing. I had the heat on at high but it did little to warm up the place. Other minor annoyances, you needed a cable for Internet access, so if you had something like the Mac book air you were out of luck. The concierge was not very helpful. Asked him for directions to several places and all he would do was hand you a map and say taxi, taxi. People on the street were far more helpful in letting me know how to get around.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your comment posted on Tripadvisor.

First of all, we are sorry to learn about your disappointment.

The room that you stayed is an economy single room with size of 12 square meters. It is a small room which explains why it is named economy single room, with a single bed of 3 x 6.0 feet. Despite of its compact room size, it is one of the best-selling room categories in the hotel due to its rate offer. The hotel does offer other room categories namely Superior and S Studio with an average size of 16 and 27 square meters respectively. We do provide WIFI internet access for our Business rooms on 15 to 20/F, and our S Signature floor, and considering upgrade for the rest of the floors.

The first 10 days of February is considerably cold. The hotel has offered heater and extra blanket for our guests upon their requests.

We have been receiving a lot of positive comments on our concierge service. I believe that they have failed to provide friendly service during the peak service time. But we give no excuse to ourselves and will brief the concierge team about this and ensure prompt and friendly service is provided at all times.

We appreciate your comments and will make every effort to improve.

Yours sincerely,

The Hotel Management Team

“Good location, but...”

Still in the charterhouse while writing this review. Rooms were reasonably priced for causeway bay area but when we got the bill we were surprised by 10% additional service charge to the room charges. Also when we asked yesterday if the breakfast was included, both the front desk officer and concierge said that it was. However upon eating we discovered that an additional HKD 99 per head was charged. A little misunderstanding since we dont speak cantonese. although more people in HK speak english than other parts of China, knowing a few phrases in cantonese would immensely help. The staff however were friendly accomodating. We usually asked them to write down the names of our destinations in chinese so we could show them to the cab driver. The rooms though small and a little dated were clean with a tub in the bathroom. However my parent's room although designated non-smoking reeked of smoke so they asked to be transferred. Location is good. The front desk officer said that wifi was absent in our floor 13th, but we did manage to connect now and then at high speeds. It was free and accessible in the lobby. The nearest MTR station at times square building is about a 5-10 minute walk through a wet market which was filled with live and fresh seafood and fruits. It was our first time to stay at the hong kong side of hong kong and although we missed familiar shops at the kowloon side, we found this area to be newer, with more tourists and more exensive shops. But this is just my opinion. So we scheduled a day to visit tung chung before we leave for hopefully cheaper shopping :). We ate lunch at the famous crystal jade restaurant at 3pm at IFC mall and found it packed. The xiao long bao, a pork dumpling eaten with red vinegar and ginger is definitly a must try. Water is not usually served in restaurants especially along the street so unless you bring you own, be prepared for the staple hot water or tea. I learned that "mixed meat" dish actually consists of innards, seafood, sausages and tofu... but actually quite tasty. So for the less adventurous gourmands, stick with chicken or beef :) or try mcdonalds which i learned serves soup and red bean pie too for dessert. February is a wonderful time to visit since the weather is still cool which is my excuse to don my leather jacket and boots, a treat for someone who lives in the tropics! As for the charterhouse, try it out but keep my advice in mind :) and try to get a mountain view room for a better experience. Till my next review!

Room Tip: Mountain view, higher floors. For some reason the 12th floor smells like smoke.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your comments shared on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry to learn that there are some misunderstandings about the service and breakfast charge.

First, it is found that the 10% service charge is shown on our hotel booking platform, together with its guarantee and cancellation policy. Second, I believe that the front desk officer had tried to promote the discounted breakfast offer upon your arrival which might result in an impression that breakfast was included. In fact, the hotel provides another package called Executive Plus that includes daily buffet breakfast and internet access.

From time to time, we received many interesting comments about their shopping experience in Hong Kong. Apart from the branded shops selling expensive items, there are many mid-scale shops around the Wanchai and Causeway Bay area of which you can find some bargaining deals.

We appreciate your compliment on the friendly service of the hotel. For your next visit, please inform us your preference for non-smoking room. Close to 50% of the rooms are non-smoking rooms. Our front desk officers could have rooms pre-blocked in advance prior to your arrival.

We look forward to serving you again in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

The Hotel Management Team

“Good Hotel in Hong Kong”

My wife and I stayed at The Charterhouse Hotel whilst staying for 4 nights in Hong Kong on vacation. As it was our first stay in Hong Kong we were not sure what to expect but the accommodation was excellent for our vacation. The rooms are not large but definitely adequate. The location was perfect for us and very affordable. Only minutes by taxi from the train station, easy to catch transport. Staff very helpful and both my wife and I walked around the area late at night without a worry. Breakfast is the only meal we had at the hotel, which was a banquet. Western and Eastern tastes were catered for and not expensive. We travelled daily and location was perfect for us, as is quiet area but only minutes walk to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor and the views over the city were great.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your compliment shared on Tripadvisor.

It is great to learn that you had an enjoyable stay in Hong Kong at the hotel and appreciate the friendly service, location convenience and value for money accommodation service.

I am sure you have explored the hustle and bustle around the Wanchai and Causeway Bay area. There are many retail shops and restaurants around the hotel which many of our guests call it a shopping and dining paradise.

We will share your good experience with our fellow colleagues and encourage them to go beyond their borders and perform better.

We look forward to warmly welcoming you again in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

“Not friendly, bad service- left our luggage outside”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

my boyfriend and i stayed at the charter house for 4 nights, we didnt find the staff very friendly, or warm, the foyer smelt so strong of pot pourri it was quite irritating, however the worst part was that when we asked them if they could store our luggage after check out, so we could walk around for a few more hours before out flight( which was at midnight), we were horrified to find they had left ALL OUR LUGGAGE IN THEIR DRIVEWAY, including my handbag with my passport in it. I was so shocked, it was a few meters easily in view of the main street Wan Chai Rd ..
NEVER staying here again.. be careful.

Room Tip: if u do wish to stay here- pick the signature rooms, they are probably better

Dear guest,

Thank you for sharing your comment on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry that you are not happy with pot pourri scent that we have been trying to create in the lobby.

The hotel drive way is part of the hotel property under the guardianship of our security officers. Besides, those stored luggage are covered by baggage net. We always urge our guests to have their valuable items including passport and travel document taken with them all the time.

Security is one key element in our guest service and we make no compromise on this.

Thank you again for your comments.

Yours sincerely,

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed at the Charterhouse for 3 nights in January. Overall we found the hotel very impressive and a good 3 star base to explore Hong Kong. The location was very good in between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay MTR stations. We found it easy to get to by train from the airport. There was an excellent street market nearby with local produce and lots of fresh seafood.

The room and bed was comfortable and clean and we had a lovely view of the mountains. We did not have an issue with noise, there was little to no street noise in the room we stayed in on the 15th floor. We didn't find the room to be too small, we had 4 suitcases and managed to have enough room to be comfortable. The only negative would be the smell in the lobby and the room - it smelt a bit musty and covered with air freshener. But we would definitely stay here again and recommend it to the mid-range traveller.

Room Tip: Higher floor for less street noise and a room facing the mountains at the back of the hotel!

Dear guest,

Thank you for your comment shared on the Tripadvisor.

It is great to learn that you appreciate the service, location, transportation access and the room comfort. Happy that you passed by the local market and found it interesting. A lot of our guests buy fresh fruits and are amazed by the bargain and offer of choices there.

There is a week's time in mid January when humidity level in Hong Kong is extremely high that might cause the odor. That explains why our housekeeper had used air freshener to keep the air smelling pleasant during that period of time.

We thank for your appreciation on the value-for-money accommodation experience and look forward to warmly welcoming you again in the near future.

Yours sincerely
