“Ok, but tired.”

The Silvermine Bay Hotel is a good alternative for those with kids looking for a quieter, beach-like experience.
But don't expect much. While clean, it has the feel of the Mainland. Very poor service, with the desk staff doing the absolute minimum. Forget anyone offering you a drink or food by the pool. You'll be dragging your bags from the ferry pier (about 1/2 a kilometer) and then up the stairs to your room as the desk staff watch you passively.
The breakfast is included, and is not bad but not great. Sort of like this hotel.
Basically, you get your room, which is nice. You get the beach and the quiet environment. That's about it. Those of us with Mainland China experience with find this all very familiar.

Room Tip: See if you can get an upgrade to the beach side.

“Great beachside location, hotel average, stay if you can get a good price”

Me, my husband and teenage daughter stayed here for 2 nights in early April, we had just spent 6 nights in Hong Kong, and Lantau island was a nice, relaxing change of pace. It is true that the hotel is dated, particularly the rooms which have a mildewy smell which goes away slightly when you turn the a/c on, however it is quite comfortable and has the most beautiful setting on the beach with views of the ferries coming and going from Mui Wo. I think the pool is only open from April to October, quite normal in Hong Kong. We really enjoyed the pool while we were there, very clean and not crowded. The hotel has a lovely front terrace right across a pathway from the beach, there you can eat your breakfast (buffet included in room price - I thought it was quite adequate, fruit, juice, cereals, toast, bacon, sausage and eggs plus tea or coffee), or you can have a lovely afternoon tea for 2 for HK $98, well worth it, or you can enjoy your happy hour cocktails. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, ate once at the China Bear and once at La Pizzeria in town, both nice, cheap meals. The hotel is 8 mins walk from the ferry terminal, and the ferry takes just 30 mins to reach Central, HK, ferries run frequently throughout the day and evening. The staff were excellent, and there are flat screen TV's and small fridges in the room, free internet with a drink in the bar for 2 hours.
I'd say the bottom line on the Silvermine beach hotel is if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of HK, in a beautiful beach location, and are not expecting luxury accommodations then it's definitely worth a try if you can get a good price on the room.

Stayed here for 2 nights on our way to New Zealand.Had a room with a lovely view but unfortunately you couldn't open the patio door.I asked the maid and was told it wasn't allowed.Bed was very comfortable and it was good to have a kettle and teabags.Plenty of fresh fruit and bread on the buffet breakfast and the coffee was excellent.Staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely quiet location and interesting village.Arrived there by bus which was a long and scary journey, left by taxi which was much better.Had a lovely ferry ride into the centre of Hong Kong which was very good.

“Location is great but property needs work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2012

I'd seen the Silvermine on previous visits to Mui Wo when hiking the Lantau Trail and finally decided to book for a night so we could avoid the long trip back to Central or Tung Chung to lay our heads. In the end, we weren't exactly disappointed, but there's very little to be excited about other than the location:
- The property is pretty much exactly as described: reasonably clean but very dated. It's directly on the beach -- and it's a nice beach wide beach that hugs the cove, probably takes 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other.
- Our room was a garden view in the annex. It smelled slightly of mildew so we were sad to find that the patio doors were fixed shut. TV selection was decent, with Pearl, BBC and plenty of other English language channels. It had a fridge.
- Service was excellent throughout our stay. Clearly these guys are trying hard to make up for the state
- The pool complex looked great but the pool was empty -- couldn't tell whether this was for the season or whether it's out of commission. There's a decent tennis hardcourt as well.
- Our meal included dinner and breakfast -- and not by choice. The setting for dinner was nice as the hotel's verandah is steps from the sand. Again service was great, but the selection and quality of the buffet wasn't great. In the morning, we took one look at the breakfast spread and decided we were better off holding out for something in town or in Tung Chung.

Mui Wo is a little seaside village that's charming in a kind of ramshackle way and easily accessible by ferry from HKI. It's a great place to unwind on a weekend away from the bustle of the city -- especially recommend the food & beer at China Bear pub, which is along the waterfront just past the ferry terminal. All in all, Silvermine's not a bad place to stay for one night if you can get a room for HK$800 or so. At prices higher than that, I'd head elsewhere.
