Me, my husband and teenage daughter stayed here for 2 nights in early April, we had just spent 6 nights in Hong Kong, and Lantau island was a nice, relaxing change of pace. It is true that the hotel is dated, particularly the rooms which have a mildewy smell which goes away slightly when you turn the a/c on, however it is quite comfortable and has the most beautiful setting on the beach with views of the ferries coming and going from Mui Wo. I think the pool is only open from April to October, quite normal in Hong Kong. We really enjoyed the pool while we were there, very clean and not crowded. The hotel has a lovely front terrace right across a pathway from the beach, there you can eat your breakfast (buffet included in room price - I thought it was quite adequate, fruit, juice, cereals, toast, bacon, sausage and eggs plus tea or coffee), or you can have a lovely afternoon tea for 2 for HK $98, well worth it, or you can enjoy your happy hour cocktails. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, ate once at the China Bear and once at La Pizzeria in town, both nice, cheap meals. The hotel is 8 mins walk from the ferry terminal, and the ferry takes just 30 mins to reach Central, HK, ferries run frequently throughout the day and evening. The staff were excellent, and there are flat screen TV's and small fridges in the room, free internet with a drink in the bar for 2 hours.
I'd say the bottom line on the Silvermine beach hotel is if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of HK, in a beautiful beach location, and are not expecting luxury accommodations then it's definitely worth a try if you can get a good price on the room.
