“good Hotel, best Location, rude Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

We stayed for 5 Nights in Xuan Wu Men Hotel, I think the Hotel is quite clean and looks new...maybe some of the reviewer confuse the hotel, because there are 2 Hotels at the same street..one is old Hotel and the other one is new Hotel...we were in this new Hotel and were satisfied with the room...
we have Internet access combined with TV and didnt need to pay extra, the room was cleaned, the bathroom was in 2 rooms divided, one for shower and the other is toilet...really convenient....
the bed was also OK and clean, all electricity work , we had hairdryer, enough bath shower and shampoo, Letterpaper, envelope etc.
the room was tidy but tiny , if you want to stay here please ask them to give you room at 15 stage

Negative : the staff were rude and they dont speak English, they really not look at your face or eyes when you talk with them...we are lucky because we have a CHINESE friend who can speak the native Language with the staff....

We just need this Hotel to sleep overnight and never spend our time in the Hotel....so we felt ok for the price and service...when we went back to Hotel.. we can direkt went to Internet and write some Mails or found some informations....its just convenience ..besides : just 2 minutes to Subway/ Metro, 3 minutes to Sogo , 10 minutes to Quan Ju De ( Peking Ducks famous restaurant) ......( all by walk ) and with subway you can reach almost many famous place in Beijing and we found this is the best practice...cheaper and faster as Taxi....
This Hotel have a very good mantou or Pao...they sell it also to pedestrian....you can easily find it at the side building ....next to the bread bakery...its really delicious!

We would comeback again by reason of the all convenience......and of course not because of the Hotel's Staff

“Mixed review”

This was my second time to stay at the Yue Xiu Hotel. I booked it the 2nd time because of its convenient location: adjacent to a subway stop, adjacent to a major department store/supermarket, and just a relatively short walk (<30 minutes) to Tien an Mien Square.

This time, I booked a double room. The view of the Southern Cathedral was spectacular. The room was adequate, albeit that the shower curtain was too short, so that water spilled from the shower onto the bathroom floor. Stingy with the soap and toilet paper, so glad I brought my own along. There was a mini-fridge, but no ice: we ordered ice from the restaurant downstairs, but still no ice tray.

Cable TV worked. Bed was king-size and adequately comfortable. I did not see any roaches or bed bugs. I had asked for a no-smoking room, but there were ash trays in the room; however, I did not smell any smoke. (Perhaps it had not been occupied for a while?)

The halls are dingy, but who spends time in the halls? The elevators work.

Main complaint: the service at the front desk. A friend in Beijing telephoned ahead to forewarn them of my late (11 p.m.) arrival, and they took that into account. However, when I got there, it was indeed fortunate that my Chinese-speaking companion was with me. They either could not --- or would not --- speak English. The conversation was carried on exclusively with my Chinese companion. In fact, the staff would not even look me in the eye!
This: I found unacceptably rude. The next day, another Chinese friend wanted to visit me, but they would not even tell him where the house phone was located: he had to find it on his own.
So: evidently, their rudeness is not confined solely to foreigners.

On checkout, though --- at this point, I was alone --- a different staff member handled the checkout efficiently, and the manager (who had not been present when I checked in) said in English: "Please come back". They also got me a taxi to the airport. So: I suppose it depends on when you arrive or leave, and who is on duty at the desk, as to whether or not you will get courteous service. Of course, in any hotel purporting to be 3-star, one should be able to expect courteous service 24/7!

One thing in their favor: they are not nosy (as in some other hotels). You're free to bring in any guests you like, without questions from the staff.

There is a business center, with Internet access, and Internet access (for laptops) in the rooms.

The room was quiet, and I did not hear any extraneous noise.

The nearby shopping center has several restaurants --- but don't expect them to speak a word of English. There is a Starbucks, which is good for us coffee-lovers; and there is also a supermarket.

All in all: for the bargain-basement (Internet) price, not a bad deal. And I like the location. But they do have to work on their manners --- especially with the Olympics coming up. At this time: I would give it ONE star!

“DUMP! Stay away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2007

DUMP! DUMP! DUMP! I was there just this weekend and I do not recommend this place to anyone! A group of 18 of us went there and after 5 minutes of checking in our rooms, 14 of us were at the front desk to complain along with other travelers who were there to complain about not getting what they paid for! The hallways of the hotel are filthy and upon opening the room, it smelled extremely funky. The electricty didn't work and there was zero air conditioning. The decor is outdated by 25 years with cirgarette burns on the furniture. My bed was made up but there where seasame seeds in the sheets and the bed was so hard that it felt like you were sleeping on a box spring. The bathroom is full of mildew and mopping must be only a yearly thing there. The carpets were too gross to put your feet on, thankly they give you slippers! The location is merely okay since there are other places in the city that are much more interesting. Our group stayed only one night and found a much better place for the remainder of of stay in Beijing. Also, I got a weird rash on my legs and I am thinking it was from the bed. People in our group remarked that hostels are nicer than this place.

“Good location only”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2007

The location is excellent. It's right next to a subway stop. It's also close by to restaurants and a Walmart.

I agree with other posters that the staff can be quite rude. I was yelled at by housekeeping for asking why the electricity in half of my room wasn't working properly, but they did eventually send someone to help me.

The rooms were okay- I suppose they are what you get for the price. The room smelled rather musty. There were cockroaches in the bathroom. The cheaper rooms are quite small- think cruise ship sized!
