“Hotel OK, our room terrible!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This was the last of our hotels on our Travelsphere tour. The staff were rude from the moment we arrived. Our room was very peculiar - it has the washbasin in a cubicle in the hallway, outside the bathroom, as one enters the room! The room was small and dark made even more so by the fact that the two lightbulbs were not working. These were (1) over the washbasin mirror (in the cubicle) and (2) on the desk also by a mirror. Despite asking FIVE times for the bulbs to be replaced only one was actually done eventually, by the desk. So in the end we removed a bulb from one of the ceiling lights and replaced the bulb over the washbasin. We still had a dark room but at least we could now see in the mirror! We asked three of the reception staff for envelopes but they either pretended they didn't understand or said they didn't have any. Our guide had better luck and got us some. Our final dinner was in a really lovely room downstairs but spoiled by surly staff who obviously did not want to be there and were practically throwing the dishes on the table. Breakfast was a strange selection - there were chips in one of the containers, probably to cater for European taste?! We wouldn't go back nor recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to ask for a change of room if you get a bad one - several of our group changed...

“Not a Bad Start”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed in this hotel as part of the Travelsphere Discover China tour in January 2012.

Our first visit to the hotel on the 19th of Jan was for two nights, and we stayed in room 918 - I was very apprehensive about our tour with Travelsphere as this had been my first time going on an organised tour, so I had no idea what the hotels would be like - I was most pleasantly suprised with what we found across the whole trip.

As lynadt has noted below, the hotel rooms do feature large windows which at night become very cold - although, even in Beijing's -12 nightime temperatures, the heating did a good job of keeping us warm.

Hotel bar was rather poor, seemed the staff did not want to do their job and spoke very little english.

Rooms were smoking rooms if necessary, just needed to ask reception for an ash tray and they would send one up via housekeeping. Not once did the room smell of smoke, so ventilation was done well, as was the housekeeping.

One tip for families with children, as mentioned by other travellers, is that there are "items" for sale in the bathroom including a vibration ring, condoms, lubes....best to hide these if you're with children!

Other tip to mention, as seems to be the norm with any 4 star hotel in China, is that the "sauna" is a thinly veiled cover for essentially a brothel. "You want happy ending?" springs to mind! Be warned.

Beds hard but this seemed to be the norm in China - certainly not the worse that we encountered on our trip.

Location seemed quite far out from the main areas of Beijing, seemed to be close to the tourist spots of Tian'an'men Square and the Forbidden City - quite far away from Dong Hua Men night market and San Li Tun bar street.

Overall, a good stay here and would recommend for future travellers going to Beijing.

Room Tip: Bring some earplugs if travelling over the Chinese New Year period!

“pretty good”

This was the last hotel we stayed in on our trekking tour of the great wall of China, and the first hotel where an 'english style breakfast' was on offer. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the food was good. Its a very big international style hotel but as for the location I cant really comment, Beijing is an enormous city and we were driven to the places we wanted to visit which did take a while but i think that is the case wherever you stay as its such a big place.
I would use this hotel again.

“could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This was the first and last hotel used on our Travelsphere discover China tour. Not the best on trip. The area around the hotel felt safe for a walk after dinner. Lots of shops and a local market to look at. Room large, but heating not working properly. Large metal windows which got very cold. Ending up moving bed as far from window as possible and also keeping curtains shut all the time. On our return we were assigned the same room, which the rep managed to get changed.Heating a little better but still the same problem with windows. Breakfast had a good choice of differing types of items.

“I liked it”

I liked this hotel. It felt more in the centre of things than others that I stayed at in China. There were a small convenience shops and a bakers opposite. Nice foyer, expensive bar drinks - much cheaper in the restaurant - and they didn't know how to make a gin martini - which was disappointing. Food not bad, breakfast big, did seem to be a lot of package tours there if I'm honest. Room was nicely furnished with an 'interesting' array of purchase options, [vibrating ring anyone?] Fewer toiletries & freebies than other hotels I stayed in but I quite liked it. Lovely comfy beds with 'seed' pillows, which were great.
