“Pretty decent for a Chinese 4 star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2009

I stayed at the hotel because it was a conference venue. Billed as 5 star, I would rate it as Chinese 4 star at most. The room is spacious, clean, with all proper amenities, coffee/tea making facilities, hairdryer, crt tv, slippers, robe etc. Nothing to complain about for the price u pay.

The nicest surprise was getting free internet access and not too bad access at that. The nastiest part is - the ongoing renovations which start at 8am and ends at 6pm and the cigarette smoke that invades your non-smoking room no matter what!

I dined at the hotel's F&B outlets more times than I desired due to work commitments. The Cherry Tree Cafe is nothing to yell about. The breakfast is typical oily fare with an egg station, noodle station, usual continental and asian breakfast stuff. I had room service: nasi goreng - pls give it a miss, too oily, bland and American portioned! and wanton noodles (if you come from Spore/Msia, it's not the kind of yellow noodles you might expect). But all in all, I'd say the food is decent at the 3rd floor Xinjiang restaurant (we were hosted to 10 course meal) and the Little Boat House. The Little Boat House has these little boats docked and floating on water. It was just odd to sit in a rocking boat having a meal. I suppose it's a novelty for the lao wai but really, it's quite annoying cos it rocks left right everytime a service staff comes up to serve you. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the mei2 cai4 kou4 rou4 (mustard greens with belly pork) with porridge.

Hotel health club (again, testament to how much time I'd spent in this hotel!!) - give it a miss unless u really need to have that massage. It's expensive and not that great for service.

Very nice location. in heart of cbd. supermarket, shopping mall very near by. Indian restraunt 5 mins from taxi. only problem is that the rooms and bathrooms are a bit small. (superior rooms). the furniture is typical old style hotel furniture. old crt tv....not an issue but could be better.

The Asia hotel is a top quality hotel. Everything from the bathroom to bedding is clean and comfortable. the water pressure is good and they provide bath salts to relax in. the bathroom is marble except the tub (standard). they provide slippers, robes and so on. would definitely return and recommend.

  • Liked — clean and comfortable beds
  • Disliked — nothing, although the hotel was paid through a tour so exact payment is unknown, may be pricey

“Keep your expectations in check”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2007
2

I have stayed here several times over the past year and each time I have to manage my expectations in a significant way. The hotel "looks' very nice and indeed the accomodations are certainly well above adequate by normal China hotel standards. The Asia Hotel bills itself as a 4-5 star property, however, like many things in China these days, appearance tends to trump substance and this hotel is a case in point. Rooms, while clean and reasonably well appointed are small - bathrooms are "tight" - again, not what you'd expect from a 4-5 star property in Asia.

A few specifics for those considering staying here:

1) if you are a non-smoker, this is not a good hotel for you. Out of 12 floors, only 2 - the 7th and the 11th - are designated non-smoking. In and of itself, this is not a problem, however, due to this being primarily a local market property, smokers predominate and the smell of smoke permeates absolutely everything - including non-smoking rooms. Reserving a non-smoking room in advance is also problematic as I've only received a pre-requested non-smoking room upon check in 1 in 3 times (I was able to get moved the other two so they can be quite helpful).

2) staff training is marginal and I have yet to see the same people working here on any two successive visits. There are an abundance of "trainees" however and they really do try hard, but somehow the hotel doesn't seem to set them up for success. Due to the wide variances in skill sets among employees, service levels are equally varied - one minute you're put out, the next you're awed... there tend to be more "put outs" than "awes" on any given day, unfortunately.

3) english (or German or French as far as I can discern) is not well understood except in formulaic memorized bursts - not sure what the language learning process is supposed to be, but this hotel bills itself as a Chinese 4-5 star property ... and this is undoubtedly how it's perceived in the local market. It would be a 2.5-3 star max in comparison to other "international" properties in terms of service levels.

4) services are subject to inconsistent hours (I have yet to discover the exact hours the cashier is available to change money - I use an ATM in the area instead).

5) On the plus side - the restaurant does serve a very solid buffet (again, not 4-5 star) but good variety, good quality and plentiful.

Again, let me stress - this is not a "bad" hotel. It just isn't a 4-5 star and if you're expecting 4-5 star you're going to be disappointed, particuarly in terms of software. This is not great value for the price.

“Train the staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2006

The hotel is clean and reasonably maintained. The food and beverage restaurants and bars all the staff need training poor slow service long waits for the food.
The staff do try ,however ,they lack knowledge of English ,essential in a International Hotel.Better value Swiss Hotel next door .They truly know what they are doing.International Management in Swisshotel.
Would be good value if staff were trained. An example of no follow up.I was picked at random to fill out a Questionnaire with Management.I was told they would get back to me.Never heard a word.Better hotels than this I will not stay here again
