“almost too much, but couldn't complain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2010

location: to my ignorance, quite a long walk to tian'anmen square. lots of restaurants and grocery stores nearby, though

room: twin bed, too spacious for one person. desk was superb.

amenities: phone is good. internet isn't super fast but doesn't disconnect and quite expensive (cny 50 per day). tv has a good deal of english channels but witnessed first-hand an act of government censorship. restaurant is quite ok

concierge: quite confusing where it is (to the right), considering the lobby's dominated by their liyuan theater. staff english might not be good for a hotel of this class

“Tired hotel needs updating-service upgrade”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010 via mobile

This is a hotel which has seen better days. The rooms and furniture were old. The carpet worn. No wireless Internet. English language television limited. The hotel is not objectively far from Tienamien but it is in the wrong direction. Away from attractions. Caters to groups they will not have to worry about serving agin. Not that expensive but Beijing has many many better values very long uninteresting walk to metro. This is like being in queens or south of Thames- close but no cigar.

“Excellent Hotel”

Stayed for 3 nights during our 24day tour of China with CTS. Excellent Hotel - good food - good service - friendly staff throughout. Centrally located for all attractions and there are many. Just like Shanghai a fantastic city well worth a longer stay.

“Tired tourist hotel away from sights”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2010

We visited here twice for a total of 4 nights with "Just You" tour. The hotel is a long walk from the main sights, especially Tianamen Square, but taxis only cost about £2 to get there.

The rooms are fairly clean but show signs of heavy use and need of some maintenance. It is pot luck how well the air-con works and the room can be too hot for many. There is a safe in the wardrobe.

The beds were very firm and had wheat filled pillows, but actually gave a very good night's sleep.

The bathroom had mould in the corners between the bath and tiles but was otherwise quite well equipped.

There is a mini drinking water water dispenser in the room which can also boil water for (complimentary) tea. (Do not drink the tap water).

Breakfast was a wide ranging buffet in either an English or a Chinese style coffee shop. Unfortunately some of the hot dishes were luke-warm and baked beans were cold.

We were served Chinese food at lunch and dinner at large tables with a turntable in the middle gradually filled up with various dishes. Some of it was very spicy and some was garlic laced. The Peking Duck offered as a 'treat' was soft rather than crispy and one of the few dishes remaining unfinished by all. Sweet and Sour pork however disappeared quickly. Rice can appear at any time during the meal, and soup is served near the end.

The hotel front desk was undermanned and the concierge was not particularly good at fetching a taxi. If you stand at the wrong part of the front desk to use their money exchange you will be eventually asked to go to the right place to resume your wait.

Overall, I consider this hotel to be aimed at the type of person like tourists who are unlikely to return. This puts too much pressure on the hotel to maintain high standards of maintenance. This is why I rate it as just average.

“OK but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2010

I stayed here with my husband for three nights while travelling through China. The hotel had a nice reception but the staff were pretty dismissive so they grabbed our passports and disappeared while we were left standing there.

The room was a quite battered and had seen better days. The water cooler/boiler was a bit peculiar and the cooler electrics were dubious.

The hotel seemed pretty full and breakfast was total chaos. The food was OK but nothing special, and there were so many people it was hard to see what was there.

The location was alright but it was a long walk to Tianamen. A few people commented that the area around the hotel didn't seem very nice, but we did venture into the hutongs immediately behind it and we did not feel threatened at all BUT it would be quite easy to lose your bearings and get very lost.
