“Just OK”

This hotel claims to be one of the 5 best hotels in Beijing. I find it a slight exaggeration. In general the hotel is fine but only fine. It’s situated 30-minutes walk from the Tiananmen Square; the rooms are clean and comfy but I found them a bit depressing (there’s something sad about the colors); bathroom a bit old-fashioned but clean; breakfast buffet ok. I travelled with a group of friends and some of them had problems with heating. Some rooms were extremely cold and there was no way to heat them up because the windows were leaky. The hotel staff could not fix the problem and only suggested setting the heating at max temperature which did not help at all. One thing I highly recommend is head and shoulders massage that I went to at 1 am and was one of the best massages I ever experienced . Globally I would say the hotel is average.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in the "central section" of the hotel. The rooms situated at the end of the w...

“Basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

I think you could do better. Rooms were basic. Bed VERY hard. Breakfast bland. The position is good to walk to downtown sites, so if you don't mind basic then go for it.

“A nice hotel... except for the bathroom”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

Stayed at this hotel for part of a group travel trip. Attached to the Beijing Opera Company's building, the hotel is furnished with touches from the Opera. Rooms are fairly large, with very high ceilings (older building... nice touch). Beds are firm and the barley pillow is a treat (if you like heavy pillows). The rooms were well maintained and the hotel overall was a good value. HOWEVER, the bathroom is a disaster. From the 1980s hair-dryer that wouldn't dry anything, to the dirt dripping down the wall, to the top of the in-shower shampoo dispenser that had never been cleaned, the bathroom experience is so bad that I was would consider staying elsewhere.

From a Western point of view, I'd skip breakfast as well. It's not worth the money, though there is VIP dining room as well, and if you're on the VIP floor, apparently the food is better there.

Wifi in the lobby, but no net access in the rooms.

“Sleep cheap but far away from all”

The hotel is clean and affordable. The staff does not understand a bit of english however they advertise they do speak English - they don't! Taxis don't like to take you to the hotel so you end up needing to use the subway which is a 20-30 minute walk away from the hotel.

“Great Breakfast, great staff but rooms just okay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

Like so many hotels in China, this hotel looks great from the outside (and online) but has flaws on the inside. This hotel is an architecturally significant, old and charming hotel with a theme of the Beijing Opera - in fact there are performances there in the Liyuan Theatre which are worth seeing. The lobby is lovely and has a huge skylight which makes it bright and airy. The staff is very helpful and the breakfast is wonderful.

The rooms are not as good as the exterior and lobby. They smelled of mold and the shower did not drain well. There is a safe and mini-fridge in the room, wired Ethernet (Wifi only in lobby). The location is fairly good - you can take a 10 minute walk to the the Temple of Heaven or to the Hongqiao (Pearl) Market, and it is a 15 minutes walk from both the Caishikou and Hepingmen subway stations. Overall, it is a good hotel that could use some upgrading as to cleanliness, but I would stay here again.
