The Grand Hyatt Beijing is a beautiful hotel with large spacious rooms, in a nice central location. The Grand Hyatt Beijing is easy to get to, there's a metro stop right on the corner. Be careful of the taxi cabs loitering in the area cause they will try to rip you off. I asked the cabbie how much the fare would be from the Grand Hyatt Beijing to, I think, the Forbidden City. He said the fare would be about $10. That is a complete rip off. You can walk to the Forbidden City from the Grand Hyatt Beijing in about 15 minutes. Or you can walk down into the subway and get a ride for about $2.
The Grand Hyatt Beijing sits on top of a mall (Oriental Plaza), and you can access it by walking down the main stair in the lobby. They keep a door man standing guard at the doorway separating the hotel from the mall, I'm guessing to keep hookers and shady people out. They do a pretty good job, but once you walk into the mall, expected to be pestered by girls asking to practice their English with you. The Oriental Plaza has a lot of restaurants, shops, and I think an ice rink (though it might have been another mall.) You can also access the subway from the mall, though the signage is somewhat confusing.
The Grand Hyatt Beijing lies a few blocks away from the Wangfujing Night Market. Just make a right turn out of the hotel door, keep walking until you find some stairs to street level. Once you step out into the street you'll see it on your right hand side. You can find some cheap souvenirs (haggle) in the stalls, a video game arcade in one of the alleys, and restaurants galore. If you're an adventurous eater, the Wangfujing Night Market is where you'll find fried starfish, scorpions, silk worms, as well as other....interesting meals.
Now on to the staff. They were all very friendly, spoke almost perfect English, and were very efficient. They had me checked in in less than 5 minutes. They have staff scattered throughout the lobby to help their guests, and they are very proactive. If you have a puzzled look on your face, or if they see you looking at your map deciding what to do, they don't hesitate to help out. I booked a guestroom online for about $300 a night, but when I got to the hotel, I found out that they had upgraded me to a two bedroom corner suite. That was a very pleasant surprise. The main bedroom had a king size bed, two bedside tables, two dressers, a work desk, and a large flat screen TV in the corner. The main bedroom had its own bathroom with a separate tub and standing shower. The shower is encased in see through glass. There is another bathroom in the suite, right next to the entrance, but it only has a shower, sink, and toilet. No tub. The second bedroom had two twin beds, a large closet, some end tables, a dresser, and a large flat screen TV. The suite does have a kitchen, with a dishwasher, refridgerator, and a heating element. You can't cook any meals on the heating element though. It looks like it's meant to just warm up food, not prepare entire meals. The living room has several tables, a couple couches, and a large flat screen TV. One of the little touches I liked was that they decorated the room with fresh lilies, not fake plastic ones.
Whether for business or pleasure, this is a great hotel in a central location. Definitely going here again.
