“Grand Hyatt Beijing great place to stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed at this hotel in January 2012 and found it to be quite nice. The rooms are fine. No wifi in the room so if you have a MacBook Air with no internet cable connection you need to go down to the lobby. I would give it a 5 Star rating but I found it quite expensive and again, the no wifi in the room was a pain.

It is in a great location though - pretty much in the centre of the action. The lobby is nice, the hotel staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The pool is spectacular.

* We did a day trip to the Great Wall arranged by the Concierge. It was expensive - $250 for two of us in a minivan with an english translator. We found out the translator only received around $10 for the day. I wonder where the rest of the money went. The hotel should have told us to expect to tip the driver and translator.

Dear Reviewer

I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your recent stay experience with us on Trip Advisor. I was very surprised to read that you did not believe that you had Wi-Fi in your room, as indeed our entire hotel, guest rooms and public spaces are geared for easy Wi-Fi connection and in particular in the guest rooms, where in fact multiple devices can connect for the one charge.

Thank you for highlighting the pool, it is definitely a unique and popular aspect of our hotel. In relation to the Great Wall tour, from reading your post I gather you had a private tour and the charge is correct given your explanation. However, given the service is provided by our preferred third party tour company, we do not have any knowledge as to what they pay their employees and as such I can not comment on the alocations of such charges. I can however state that the hotel does receive a booking commission, which is common practice in the industry world wide for such services.

We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Best Regards

“Great stay...the ball was dropped....but they responded!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed in early December, 2011, for 4 nights with my brother and son. Club level, suite was more than perfect for our needs. Pool was over-the-top great! Ball was dropped from the get-go, with...an absence of attention in the Club lounge. We saw many guests, particularly business men, receiving adoring welcomes into the lounge, and prompt service...including delivery of food (some meal choices are brpught to you on request, rather than through the selfserve option. On the first occasion (evening), our food was ordered, and never delievered. I attributed this to the odd 'oopsie'. However, the next morning was the tipping point...when we ordered breakfast and saw a number of guests who came in after us, being served their breakfast ahead of us. Thankfully, Paul Wright was in the house! I met with him, shared our discontent (I said we felt invisible). Paul was approachable and receptive to the feedback, even though I was probably less constructive than my usual, as I was annoyed and running late for the tour...Paul promosed to address the issues, and subsequently went over and above to make us feel 'visible'...incl delivering the most delightful in-house made 'gingerbread and chocolate' village to our room!! Made our day!!! I plan to return in Feb for a business trip, and although I may not be able tonsplurge on the Club level, I hope to find some of those shortfalls in service a thing of the past!

Dear Reviewer ( Of course I remember you, but for privacy I will refer to you as "Reviewer")

You have been very kind in your review and I am just so glad I had the opportunity to learn of the issues your were experiencing and to get things back on track. We are not perfect, and at times indeed we do "Drop the Ball", however, when it does happen, authentic hospitality is all about how we respond and try and "Right the Wrong".

I look forward to welcoming you back and please email me directly with your travel details so I can personally oversee your stay.

Best Regards

“Everything you could ever want”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The Grand Hyatt Beijing is a beautiful hotel with large spacious rooms, in a nice central location. The Grand Hyatt Beijing is easy to get to, there's a metro stop right on the corner. Be careful of the taxi cabs loitering in the area cause they will try to rip you off. I asked the cabbie how much the fare would be from the Grand Hyatt Beijing to, I think, the Forbidden City. He said the fare would be about $10. That is a complete rip off. You can walk to the Forbidden City from the Grand Hyatt Beijing in about 15 minutes. Or you can walk down into the subway and get a ride for about $2.

The Grand Hyatt Beijing sits on top of a mall (Oriental Plaza), and you can access it by walking down the main stair in the lobby. They keep a door man standing guard at the doorway separating the hotel from the mall, I'm guessing to keep hookers and shady people out. They do a pretty good job, but once you walk into the mall, expected to be pestered by girls asking to practice their English with you. The Oriental Plaza has a lot of restaurants, shops, and I think an ice rink (though it might have been another mall.) You can also access the subway from the mall, though the signage is somewhat confusing.

The Grand Hyatt Beijing lies a few blocks away from the Wangfujing Night Market. Just make a right turn out of the hotel door, keep walking until you find some stairs to street level. Once you step out into the street you'll see it on your right hand side. You can find some cheap souvenirs (haggle) in the stalls, a video game arcade in one of the alleys, and restaurants galore. If you're an adventurous eater, the Wangfujing Night Market is where you'll find fried starfish, scorpions, silk worms, as well as other....interesting meals.

Now on to the staff. They were all very friendly, spoke almost perfect English, and were very efficient. They had me checked in in less than 5 minutes. They have staff scattered throughout the lobby to help their guests, and they are very proactive. If you have a puzzled look on your face, or if they see you looking at your map deciding what to do, they don't hesitate to help out. I booked a guestroom online for about $300 a night, but when I got to the hotel, I found out that they had upgraded me to a two bedroom corner suite. That was a very pleasant surprise. The main bedroom had a king size bed, two bedside tables, two dressers, a work desk, and a large flat screen TV in the corner. The main bedroom had its own bathroom with a separate tub and standing shower. The shower is encased in see through glass. There is another bathroom in the suite, right next to the entrance, but it only has a shower, sink, and toilet. No tub. The second bedroom had two twin beds, a large closet, some end tables, a dresser, and a large flat screen TV. The suite does have a kitchen, with a dishwasher, refridgerator, and a heating element. You can't cook any meals on the heating element though. It looks like it's meant to just warm up food, not prepare entire meals. The living room has several tables, a couple couches, and a large flat screen TV. One of the little touches I liked was that they decorated the room with fresh lilies, not fake plastic ones.

Whether for business or pleasure, this is a great hotel in a central location. Definitely going here again.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you so very much for writing such a detailed review of your stay with us and your experiences, in and around our hotel. I have noted a number of your more concerning comments relating to our shopping mall and please rest assured I will share them with the approriate management of the mall, who are separate from the hotel.

I was very happy to read that you enjoyed your room and that you found our service to be so friendly and helpful, which is the essence of authentic hospitality. Overall your review was very complimentary for which we are sincerely grateful as it goes a long way in promoting our hotel.

We look forward to welcoming you back!

“Perfect location”

The Grand Hyatt Beijing is set back from the busy city streets and is adjacent to an upscale shopping center and several office buildings. It is a short walk to Tiananmen Square and The Forbidden City, a perfect location for seeing those historical sites.
It also features several excellent restaurants.
The rooms were contemporary style, nicely appointed ans comfortable. We appreciated how quiet the room was for sleeping. Our electronic key card didn't work one night when we returned from dinner and they gave us a free breakfast to compensate us for that inconvenience.
Service was warm and welcoming, something not always found in a large business hotel.

“Unbelievable location... but also unbelievable room size”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The hotel is arguably the best located spot in town. Right on Wangfujing, at the edge of the Imperial Palace, within walkable distance to Palace Museum and Tiananmen Square. Sitting on top of a subway station and a large shopping mall, so no need to brave the harsh winter winds outside.

Everything was great, nice lobby, good service, efficient check in, wonderful Peking duck at the Chinese restaurant (some argue it's one of the best in Beijing, must try). Particularly of note is the swimming pool, which despite being in the basement, when I stepped out of the elevator I thought for a moment I was transported to Bali or Phuket. Free form resort like pool and vegetation/rocks to match. Lovely.

Everything, except one thing, was great. The room itself.... I'm not exactly a huge guy, but I walked in and felt I was in some Holiday Inn. Ample size for a double bed and desk and TV, but not a lot more. Worst was when I got up in the morning and stretched, with my 5'10" body and hands reaching up I surprised myself in touching the ceiling! Wow.... Although I heard about the building's height restrictions (buildings close to palace cannot be taller than the palace itself) and the developer wanted to squeeze as many floors as possible, this was a bit too much.

Dear Reviewer

I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with some very constructive feedback on our hotel through Trip Advisor. It is only through this type of feedback that we are able to critically assess our performance and understand the required areas of improvement.

I was so glad to read that overall you had an enjoyable stay with us and indeed the pool facility is very unique, especially for a inner city based hotel. I was also thrilled that you found our service efficient and that you enjoyed our Made in China restaurant.

Finally, I am pleased to advise that we are in the final stages of planning an upgrade and refinement program to our guest rooms, which we hope to commence in the near future, which will create more space within the room, however, there is not much we can do on the ceiling height!

I hope we have the opportunity to be at your service again in the near future.

Sincerely,

Paul Wright
