I've stayed every year in Beijing Friendship hotel, but never in their 5-star faciility in Building 1, the main building of a very large complex. I usually stay in Building 3, which is more a 3- or 4-Star facility, but still very nice.
Friendship usually has an international mix of guests (unlike some provincial hotels such as the Hunan Huatian in Changsha, where I may be the only caucasian guest in a week-long stay). There is a TGIFridays that has good Western food like Tex-Mex and burgers, but also Chinese dishes with a nice outdoor patio, pleasant when the weather is decent. TIGF and main lobbies have free WiFi so you can surf the Internet and chat with friends for hours while you get served reasonably priced food.
The 4- / 3- Star rooms are clean and convenient. There is a massage center near Building 3, though I judge their prices as really high compared to massage services in Hunan and even in Shanghai. Maybe it is excellent, but I've never used it.
Their Olympic-Grade swimming pool (50 meters and excellent in every detail, e.g., water temperature) should be a major attraction for any serious lap swimmer. I used it every day during my recent stays; costs 20RMB and well worth it if you want a world-class lap swimming experience in a beautiful natatorium. This is a major attraction for swimmers like me.
Also, if you like to walk. The hotel complex itself is so huge that one can walk kilometers every day. And I've walked all the way to Peking University and back many times. It is safe and really entertaininig for a foreigner like me.
Additionally, there is right within the campus a really excellent Tea House. If you've never had the Tea House experience, please take a few hours. It is far more than really excellent tea. Impossible to understand if you've not done it. And you can walk there from your room and have 2 or 3 hours of culture, peace and tranquility. Take a friend or go alone. Either way, unless you are a total clod, you will love and remember the experience.
Service is less personal and I've had some difficulty over silly things like wanting charge 10 RMB for storing my luggage when I went away for a couple days. I was coming back to stay with them and arrrrrrrrghhh. Why couldn't they just store a bag for me for 3 days?
But every individual person did his/her best to accommodate me. It is more hotel culture that service does not match many 5-Star Chinese hotels. If you talk to the person, you WILL get good service.
