Once again, I must that all the TA readers who preceded me and took the time to post a write-up and, once again, the perception I had, after reading several dozen reviews, matched the reality. If you are a regular Peninsula, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, etc. guest, you might not feel comfortable with the size of the rooms. They are not tiny, but neither are they very specious...and storage space is at a premium. Having said that, this is one of the best hotel stays I've had in my life (and I've had hundreds).
To be fair, I usually stay in mid-priced hotels, so the Peninsula was a step up for me. But what a bargain! If you can get a room here for nearly the same, or maybe even less, than a Hilton, Marriott, etc., by all means stay here. Throughout my stay, the staff could never do enough for me. Service, service, service--everywhere, from everyone.
One reviewer wrote about a concierge not speaking very good English. I dealt with a half-dozen of those and never had a problem. I did find that some of the were very knowledgeable while others' lack of even basic knowledge about Beijing was appalling (e.g., professing not to even be aware of a well-known, high-end Chinese seafood chain that is located literally next door to the hotel, to spend 10 minutes searching on the system for one of the 5-6 most well-known shows for tourists in Beijing that has ads in every tourist magazine? Come on!)
But those are the only negatives I noticed. The dinner buffet is outstanding (lobster, crab, shrimp, prime rib, foie gras, gourmet cheeses, great desserts...Chinese, Western, sushi--they have it all! Breakfast? Excellent buffet, and they've knocked the price down to about 200 rmb. Want something special made? Just ask the chef (Sam, think his name is). He'll be only too happy to make it for you. (I had them make me lobster Alfredo, sauteing, chopping and then tossing in two lobster tails into a pan with fresh pasta and the aforementioned sauce.
And, as other noted, the location is great: Just two blocks off of Wangfujing for shopping, plenty of stores and restaurants nearby and a short walk to the Forbidden City, Tianamen Square and a number of other attractions.
(Some complained about the beds. I found my King completely comfortable. The bed itself is hard but the pillowtop added just the right amount of give for me.)
With the minor (to me) caveats above, I recommend this hotel without reservation.
Thank you, Peninsula Beijing, for a great week!
