“The size matters!”

Grand Hotel Beijing in the capital of China can boast of great location – next to Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. It’s the centre of the city with lots of fashionable boutiques and restaurants nearby. Our room was really spacious: a huge lounge and a bedroom with a king-size bed. Chinese hotels supply visitors with all amenities, including toothbrush and toothpaste, slippers, a kettle and green tea. It concerns 3 stars and lower rank, too; so Beijing 5 stars certainly had them all, together with bathrobes and body milk. The windows of our room faced the patio - not a great view - but perfect for sleeping, it was very quiet. The bed was comfy, luxury linen and an assortment of pillows to choose from. The territory of the hotel is enormous; you can have a swim in the pool, relax in spa (rather pricey) or get a drink in the bar. Frankly, the breakfast was not very good; offering mostly oriental food, no coffee too. At the same time, in China you should enjoy quality green tea; it makes a nice souvenir as well.
Tip: take care to reserve a taxi well in advance; otherwise it might take too long to wait.

“A very pleasant, very Chinese experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

This was a high end hotel geared to the Chinese traveller. The Communist Party Standing Committee was staying there for most of our stay. Unfortunately, that meant that many of the better rooms were reserved for CPC members, so our rooms were at first not ready. We had much better rooms during our second stay in June. The Forbidden City View rooms are worth the upgrade- request a high floor, if possible. The rooms were clean, the king size canopy bed in one room was spectacular- we felt like an emperor and empress in it! The bathrooms were clean, much nicer than we expected, all in marble, with tons of amenities.

The hotel is a bit hard for taxis to find- the entrance is narrow and not well marked. It is right next to the Raffles Hotel (it is connected to Raffles and from Raffles connected to the Beijing Hotel). The pool was very nice and clean, if a bit on the cold side.

The buffet breakfast was fine- nothing special, but the service was good. The dinner buffet is less terrific, but there are many other non-hotel Beijing restaurants nearby which are not only better, but much less expensive. Notably, the APM building on Wangfujing Street has terrific dumpling restaurants on the fifth floor. Avoid the basement of the closer mall to the hotel on Wangfujing Street- had several members of our party get food poisoning from the Korean and hot pot restaurants there. Also avoid the Chinese banquet restaurant in the basement of the connected Beijing hotel- pricey and poor quality food.

“Nice Hotel Overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011

Grand hotel is located on a 5-10 minutes walk from forbidden city and 4-5 minutes walk from the famous Wangfujang street. So the location is really convenient. Hotel decor is elegant and the rooms are spacious. The room rates are on the high side and the same is true for the breakfast. However, the breakfast is good with tons of variety. There is a money exchange and a tour desk in the main lobby, however I checked with them and their rates were very high and you can get the same tours at much lower price from other agents. Generally, our stay at the hotel was good. The hotel staff is nice and willing to help you. The staff in the breakfast room were really nice. The staff at the front desk were nice too however some of them need training in smiling. The beds were comfortable as well and not as hard as in other hotels.

We encountered two problems in the hotel and one of them might influence weather you want to stay in this hotel or not, This hotel has shut down their airconditioner for the spring. For the locals it might not be a problem but the people who go from cold climates really feel the heat at night. For couple of days we could not sleep properly and had to get the windows opened and even that did not help too much.

The other problem was that the shower drain was plugged and the whole shower pan flooded with water. We called the staff and they probably cleaned it but next day same thing happened.

I would recomend staying in this hotel provided the air conditioning is working and you get a reasonable rate.

“pretty nice but not amazing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2011

This hotel is good and worth it if you get a good rate. The views of the Forbidden City are nice but probably not worth the extra money. You can go to the tenth floor and see the views without paying the extra money. The pool could be warmer. The beds were great. All in all a good hotel but for China standards, not the most modern. The hotel does have some amazing art throughout. I still preferred a Ramada is Shanghai to this hotel.
