“Feel like you are really in China”

Instead of the usual global hotels try this lovely courtyard hotel. Angela Merkel was taken to see it on her recent visit to China. We agree with all the other reviews, it's a charming place, warm, comfy, helpful friendly staff and an excellent breakfast. The main alley nearby is full of little shops and bars and pedestrian tourists both Chinese and international. We walked to the Drum & Bell towers easily and also to the Lama Temple, Forbidden City etc although it takes a while. We felt safe everywhere day & night. Go to the back lakes just down from the Drum Tower & turn right just after McD's. At this time of year it's frozen solid and they all skate and sledge on it,
plus many restaurants around it. Pretty place. Actually everything was frozen, moats, rivers even waterfalls, so wrap up warm! There was a nice cafe/bar down the other end of the main Hutong, last left, called Offside, very friendly and helpful and nice sandwiches. We loved Beijing especially the Great Wall and Summer Palace.

Room Tip: Taxi from airport was 84 yuan, he found the main Hutong ok then asked somebody. Our hotel is last tu...

“Deserves the great reviews!”

We stayed for a week over the Chinese New Years - three couples.

You can't say enough about the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Front desk, restaurant, cleaning staff were all very friendly and responsive.

The breakfast that is included is very good. A nice start to the day.

It is a challenge for taxi drivers to find. You will find it easiest to arrange pick-up through the hotel as they will organize a driver that know where the hotel is.

The rooms are on the small side but very well appointed. Westerners will appreciate the quality of the bathrooms and the lovely shower. Beds are firm but very nice really.

I do not hesitate to recommend this hotel. Great staff. Fun location.

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Chinese Lunar New Year. This is an interesting boutique hotel in a converted old chinese courtyard home. Decors all done up in chinese style, so it gives a traditional feel to it compare to a conventional hotel.
Stayed in the superior room, which is abit small and with a hard bed which is the only downside to it. The heated floor is a a great welcome on a cold winter night when the temperature is down to -10C.
In short, i enjoyed my stay here very much, friendly and helpful staff, good complimentary breakfast, and a great location in Nanluoguxiang.

“A charming place in the hutong”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

On my first visit to Beijing, I stayed in a big hotel and this time, I wanted to stay in a hutong. Because we were going in December I certainly wanted a place that was sure to have reliable heat. I found this place on Trip Advisor and then followed up on it on other sites and am very glad that I made the decision. We loved it; the fact that it was so hidden in the hutong really appealed to us (although not to our first taxi driver, coming in from the airport, although I had emailed him the address and area ahead of time just to be sure; he still got lost). The rooms we had were the small ones at the back but they were cosy, comfortable and sweet. We ate dinner one night at the hotel and enjoyed it. The breakfasts were spectacular! The staff was very friendly. I had corresponded with Gyan Gao before we came and he was very efficient and friendly when I met him. The decor was very cute, and I would recommend this place to anyone who likes charm. Obviously it would not be for the 5 star hotel crowd, but for any of them who would like to step outside the box, this is the place. Walking distance to a fun street with restaurants and shops. We walked to and from the Forbidden City and Houhai Lake (although it was December there was no snow on the ground). There are two friendly dogs at the hotel and I always like a hotel with pets.

Room Tip: We had the least expensive rooms at the back; the pictures of the others look more luxurious but our...
