“HORRIBLE!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2011

I have never felt the need to give a review such as the one i am giving below!!

I checked into the hotel and was welcomed by a glass of fermented passion juice. My room key was handed to me (a plastic affair with what looks like paper stuck in it showing the room number). I followed the porter to my room and the corridors strongly smelled of urine (I KID YOU NOT!!)

My room at first sight was not too bad...on closer inspection i realised i dont have a remote control for my TV. The porter informed me that there arent enough remotes to go around so when people check out they will try and get me one!!

The shower curtain was stained yellow, the mirrors were rusted, there was mold in the wardrobe (and only two hangers). The soap dispenser in the shower was empty and the holder was filthy and stained brown.

Upon turning down my bed, i found ants on my bed sheets! Rooms are not fumigated so one or two cockroaches were also spotted. There was a leakage in the bathroom which upon reporting i was informed that someone will be by...no action was taken. Walking on the floor on bare feet made me realize that the floor was not only sticky but filthy as well. The rooms need painting and the doors as well.

There was no room service menu in the room and when i asked for one, it was brought to me but i was informed i could not keep it!! I was supposed to read it and pass it back to the reception.

The towels in the rooms are frayed are as the bed sheets. There are no safes in the room nor are there fridges for storing drinks!

During my stay, there was a power fluctuation and as it turned out, the backup generator does not support the AC functions in the room. Reception tried to convince me that the reason why my AC was not coming on was because i had left the door or window open!!

The conference room had a broken down AC which only cooled the room for the first few minutes (Frangi Pani Room) Cockroaches were also seen here. The AC leaked water through out the conference and the rude gentleman sent to repair informed us that we just need to be patient! The room will sooner or later get cool.....it didnt!

The food was nothing to write home about but edible. Juice was fermented during every meal except breakfast. The pastry chef is NOT of international standards and pastries were too heavy with margarine used as a cream base.

On our third day there the long queues during lunch were caused by food not being replenished as quickly as possible. During breakfast juice glasses were finished and more were not brought in until breakfast was almost done!

Their wireless facilities are good and free and although the staff need more training they are friendly.

Their swimming pool closes at 5.30!! IN MOMBASA!!!!!! On my last night the AC in the room refused to work!

Honestly i have never been so disappointed in a hotel.

“Great locality, good service and average choice”

I stayed in Mombasa Beach Hotel for one week in Dec 2010. I had seen horrible reviews on this hotel but had no choice because I was late in doing my booking and as such it was the only available beach hotel at the time. I must say, it turned out not be as bad as I expected. We did not experience any problem with hot water, an issue that had looked so serious going by previous reviews maybe it had been sorted out by then. The rooms were fairly clean. The hotel is very very dull with just a small TV with no DSTV in the room. The most boring part was evening entertainment. Every evening we were treated to a less than 20 minutes dance which I must say its something the management need to address seriously and come up with a programme that can liven the place. Swimming pools looked kind of old and at least a few more modern bath-beds are required. The location is just wonderful. Despite age and many shortcomings, I must laud the entire staff they really try to make you comfortable. The food was great, actually we were always offered with specially prepared food for our young daughter; mashed food, milk, porridge etc this would be packed for us upon request. Drinks were very affordable. I would say with a few touches here and there, the hotel would retain its glory. For a family wishing to spend a relaxed beach holiday I would recommend this hotel.

“I have never seen such a dirty hotel in my life”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2011

The hotel is DIRTY. I have never seen such a neglected garden - NEVER. There are plastic bottles everywhere, some rusty metal trash, everything is devastated. There are people working - I do not understand why they do not water the grass (it is completely dry), why they do not pick up the trash?!! WHY?!!! The garden furniture is also awful - a few dramatically devastated sun-beds for 300 people in a hotel (!!!) The management of this hotel must be terrible!
Rooms are also devastated and dirty - I found someone's hair on my pillow! There is a mould in the bathroom. THE ONLY good thing about this hotel is food - it is quite good, I really enjoyed it, although there are many flies in a dining room (maybe there is also some trash beside...). And bell boys are very friendly and helpful. The rest is horrible.

“Not a good choice”

Good things about this hotel were the personnel and the location right on the beach.

The hotel was outdated; toilets and showers didn't work well, swimming pool as well as other areas were dirty and worn out.

The food tasted ok, but there were many animals looking for food: crows, cats, bees, flies.. So, we had 13 people in our group, and 10/13 got FOOD POISONING.. and I was one of the 6 who needed antibiotics. This was the tip of the iceberg.. I would andvice to try to get some other hotel, or at least don't eat there!

“my worst experience and decision ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

I had plan to take my family to mombasa beach hotel because I was given good recommendations however it turned out to be major hassle and a poor decision to stay here. First the day we checked in we didn't have any hot water and one mosquito net with two beds. We called the front desk and were told both issues would be resolved by the end of the night. Someone showed up with the mosquito net that night but the ceiling hook necessary was missing. The hotel employee stated they would have it resolved by 2pm the next day, in addition the hot water issue was not resolved yet. At breakfast the next morning, which was on a sunday, we reminded front desk of both issues. We returned to our rooms that afternoon to find nothing had been done as well as no clean towels available. At that time we called again front desk again and were reassured the issues would be resolved by 6 pm while we went out to the beach. When we returned still again nothing had been done except the towels were replaced. We had to bathe our 2 year old son in cold water. At dinnertime we went to eat at the restaurant and our son fell asleep, so we asked our waiter if he could prepare a plate for him for later from the buffet, he directed us to the chef who redirected us back to the waiter. After going back and forth between the chef and waiter we prepared our own plate and ask for some sort of covering and was given another plate to cover with. We went out that night and reminded front desk of hot water and mosquito net issues once again and were reassured that they would be resolved. When we returned to the room late sunday night nothing again had been done. When we asked front desk what happened, the front desk employee quoted "what do you want me to do about it?" In our frustation we hunged up. Monday morning we were completely out of water period, called the front desk, and they stated the water pump was broken and were working on it. We could not shower, use the sink, or flush the toilet and we had to leave without using any of these necessities. When we returned to the room late afternoon, the mosquito net had finally been placed however the hot water problem continued. After calling front desk again and was reassured again it would resolved, we went to the beach then returned to the room to find no hot water and bathing our son in cold water again. At dinnertime the hostess sat us in a corner table, we prepare our plate from the buffet and return to eat, halfway finishing our plates we still had not been offered drinks or acknowledged by a waiter. It had been 30 minutes already since we arrived to our table there were tables being sat around us, whom had been offered wine list and drinks brought to them before we were attended to. After we complained about this, one of the bar waiter, Otieno, took out the time to provide us with our drinks and even came back by the end of dinnertime to assure we were satisfied. The restaurant waiter showed no concern of complaints and just laughed. At that time after numerous complaints, we requested manager on duty and were told by front desk no manager was available. How can any business be operated without any manager available to "manage things"? The bar waiter, Otieno, reassured us there is a manager available and walked with us to front desk to request the manager again, which is when we spoke to Sheikh, the manager on duty. After listening to all of our complaints, he then reassured us he will speak to the other managers and follow up with the issues and would let us know an update in the morning. He also had mentioned that we could speak to a guest relations manager the next morning about the complaints who is only available until 630pm everyday. The next day, Tuesday, the day of checkout, we asked for an update and the manager, and find nothing had been resolved and noone knew anything of our problems. We were told the managers could not be found, then told they were all in meetings and no manager on duty available again, and we had to checked out by 10am. We were also told there was no guest relations manager in the hotel whatsoever but they did have a desk for a guest relations manager in the lobby area. The bill was presented to us at the full amount of the hotel stay which is when we asked for a discount but not could be given one due to no manager on duty. The chef of the restaurant came to us as the manager on duty to listen to our complaints and made notes to address the issues with the general manager and apologized for the inconvenience but he still could not adjust the bill. We ended up paying the full price. We do not recommend this hotel for anyone because they will have a bad experience. Til this day the day after we left we have not received a phone call or anything from the general manager of showing any concerns and apologizing.these
