We've just returned from a couple of weeks at the Voyager, overall the stay was good but there are some things which need to be addressed.
Firstly starting with the good, the location of the hotel is right on Nyali beach ifs not close to anything else like bars and shops if you want to venture out from your all inclusive 'ship' to see or do something else, but being right on a stunning piece of coastline satisfies most. There is a Nakumatt shopping centre around two miles away which will cost you around £6 taxi fare return, here there is a good supermarket and other shops plus forex (foreign exchange service). If you dont mind doing as the locals do then get a matatu (public bus) to the Nakumatt cinemax complex which is a bit further away in the opposite direction that will set you back 20p. At the Cinemax is another supermarket, next to the Cinemax is a casino open all day and night I think which has a foreign exchange service that gives around 5% better than the Forex offices and certainly the hotel. You can either get a matatu back to the hotel or a tuk tuk which will cost around £1.50.
The staff will go out of their way to help you, always greeting you with a cheerful 'jambo' I think that they really make the place what it is, all work very hard indeed, the animation team are always trying to get you involved in different things but wont be pushy if you dont want to take part like us.
Good variety of pools (3) one for adults only.
The food ranges from pretty good to excellent, the main dining is buffet served and theres quite a lot of variety, I spoke with the chef whilst we were there and they are in the process of applying for a licence to serve more exotic meats such as zebra in addition to the more normal foods. The Italian restaurant is included in the all inclusive deal and is better than the main buffet but has a limited menu. The Seafood restaurant is 50% off for AI guests and 20% off the wine, very good dining indeed, we had lobster and steak for two with a decent wine and starter for around £40. At home food of this quality would be at least £100 for two.
The not so good -
Sun loungers are plentiful but there is a serious shortage of parasols, I'm informed that they are on order but this is a real failing of the hotel in my book. Many contributors have commented on this in the past and have seemingly been ignored. The hotel caters primarily for the European market, many of whom are white skinned and burn easily, believe me the Kenyan sun is very strong and to continually ignore the comments of many people is very poor in my book. As an example there are around 30 sunbeds around the sports pool with only three parasols, there are even less around the infinity pool. This needs to be addressed as a matter or urgency. The hotel advertises a 'no reserving of sunbeds' policy but everyone does it by leaving their towels on the ones under the shaded ones, the staff completely turn a blind eye to this but by having more parasols would solve the matter.
The rooms although kept clean by very attentive staff are very tired, we paid the extra for a sea facing room and it could really have done with a makeover, particularly in the bathroom where our door frame was rotting at the bottom and was pretty dark and dingy. OK you dont spend much time in your room but at the same time its good to have seomthing decent to come back to. There is also a shortage of plugs in the room. Our toilet flush broke 4 times during our stay before it as finally fixed properly. We were told by the manager that a refurbishment programme is taking place this summer but all I would say is that many contributors appear to have been told this before.
You have to pay if you want to use the room safe, for a 4* hotel this is unacceptable.
The animation team do work very hard indeed, their dancing is great as part of the entertainment in the evenings but there is only so much one can take of a black John Travolta miming his lament over Sandie or Joseph doing the same in trying to get his dreamcoat back. Would be much better to have a few more bands or a decent guitarist/singer. I got the feeling that the hotel were taking the cheap option in using their staff rather than paying out for some better entertainment.
Would I stay again? Yes probably but only once some improvements have been made, I've stayed at two hotels, here and the Papillon on the south coast and the two are around the same in terms of quality. The Papillon appears quite a bit cheaper though.
