“Best Holiday Ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

First time to Kenya, and wouldn't have changed a thing! First thoughts on arrival at Voyager, pictures do not do this place justice! It's a beautiful resort. The bathroom in our room was a little dated, but who goes to Kenya to stay in their hotel room!?
The pools were lovely, the food was amazing! Lots of opportunity to try crocodile! My partner is allergic to nuts, and we always find this a problem when travelling abroad, but the staff at Voyager knew exactly what he meant, and knew off the top of their heads the ingredients in every dish.
The staff are the friendliest people I've ever come across, and are so happy to be helping all guests. Kenyan people really make the holiday! (and I never thought I'd be saying that!)
The beach is BEAUTIFUL! White sands, beach boys are a lot of fun, and very friendly! The first time we went I felt awful because everyone wants you to buy something from them, but once they get to know you they're just really chatty.
We went on a 4 day safari with JT Safaris (for which I will write a separate review), and would recommend to anyone!
The animation team are really good, always laughing and joking with each other and guests, and also are amazing dancers!
I'm afraid of the sea, so I didn't take advantage of the all inclusive water sports, but the facilities were very good.
For us, two weeks wasn't enough, next time we will definitely be staying longer!
Please message if you want any more information, but I would recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: Our room was very close to reception, and the entertainment section, which wasn't a problem for...

“Good but improvement needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We've just returned from a couple of weeks at the Voyager, overall the stay was good but there are some things which need to be addressed.

Firstly starting with the good, the location of the hotel is right on Nyali beach ifs not close to anything else like bars and shops if you want to venture out from your all inclusive 'ship' to see or do something else, but being right on a stunning piece of coastline satisfies most. There is a Nakumatt shopping centre around two miles away which will cost you around £6 taxi fare return, here there is a good supermarket and other shops plus forex (foreign exchange service). If you dont mind doing as the locals do then get a matatu (public bus) to the Nakumatt cinemax complex which is a bit further away in the opposite direction that will set you back 20p. At the Cinemax is another supermarket, next to the Cinemax is a casino open all day and night I think which has a foreign exchange service that gives around 5% better than the Forex offices and certainly the hotel. You can either get a matatu back to the hotel or a tuk tuk which will cost around £1.50.

The staff will go out of their way to help you, always greeting you with a cheerful 'jambo' I think that they really make the place what it is, all work very hard indeed, the animation team are always trying to get you involved in different things but wont be pushy if you dont want to take part like us.

Good variety of pools (3) one for adults only.

The food ranges from pretty good to excellent, the main dining is buffet served and theres quite a lot of variety, I spoke with the chef whilst we were there and they are in the process of applying for a licence to serve more exotic meats such as zebra in addition to the more normal foods. The Italian restaurant is included in the all inclusive deal and is better than the main buffet but has a limited menu. The Seafood restaurant is 50% off for AI guests and 20% off the wine, very good dining indeed, we had lobster and steak for two with a decent wine and starter for around £40. At home food of this quality would be at least £100 for two.

The not so good -
Sun loungers are plentiful but there is a serious shortage of parasols, I'm informed that they are on order but this is a real failing of the hotel in my book. Many contributors have commented on this in the past and have seemingly been ignored. The hotel caters primarily for the European market, many of whom are white skinned and burn easily, believe me the Kenyan sun is very strong and to continually ignore the comments of many people is very poor in my book. As an example there are around 30 sunbeds around the sports pool with only three parasols, there are even less around the infinity pool. This needs to be addressed as a matter or urgency. The hotel advertises a 'no reserving of sunbeds' policy but everyone does it by leaving their towels on the ones under the shaded ones, the staff completely turn a blind eye to this but by having more parasols would solve the matter.

The rooms although kept clean by very attentive staff are very tired, we paid the extra for a sea facing room and it could really have done with a makeover, particularly in the bathroom where our door frame was rotting at the bottom and was pretty dark and dingy. OK you dont spend much time in your room but at the same time its good to have seomthing decent to come back to. There is also a shortage of plugs in the room. Our toilet flush broke 4 times during our stay before it as finally fixed properly. We were told by the manager that a refurbishment programme is taking place this summer but all I would say is that many contributors appear to have been told this before.

You have to pay if you want to use the room safe, for a 4* hotel this is unacceptable.

The animation team do work very hard indeed, their dancing is great as part of the entertainment in the evenings but there is only so much one can take of a black John Travolta miming his lament over Sandie or Joseph doing the same in trying to get his dreamcoat back. Would be much better to have a few more bands or a decent guitarist/singer. I got the feeling that the hotel were taking the cheap option in using their staff rather than paying out for some better entertainment.

Would I stay again? Yes probably but only once some improvements have been made, I've stayed at two hotels, here and the Papillon on the south coast and the two are around the same in terms of quality. The Papillon appears quite a bit cheaper though.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking quality time to give us your feedback. We do appreciate. I have particularly taken note of the Parasols issues and I want to assure you that I am working on it so it is sorted. It is true we have taken unusually long to get this corrected but please watch this page ans finally something is going to be done.
All your other comments are all to important to us and believe you me that will all be analyzed and synthesized and adopted at the opportune time.
We are so grateful, you came , you stayed and you have written back.
God Bless

“Really amazing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Review based on our stay here between 14/01/12 - 28/01/12 and we stayed in a superior sea view room.

Accommodation - Overall very impressed with the accommodation and the rooms were always kept spotless by our maid called Alice who was so attentive to our needs. Small gripes would be that the bathroom was a bit tired and dark, the bath/shower had no non slip so getting in and out could be precarious (we are in our 30's so not exactly old), the beds are extremely hard and took a few nights to get used too.

Food - We were very impressed with the food and the range of food provided is very good. I absolutely loved their brioche bread with the fruit in and although I'm not a vegetarian ate a lot of their vegetarian meals as they were so tasty. There is also a fine dining seafood restaurant which was ok but our visit was ruined slightly by the very cold and not very welcoming officer called Joyce and the wine at this restaurant tasted like vinegar. On the plus side they also have an Italian restaurant where we went no fewer than 5 times and were always very well looked after by our waiter George and the steak was divine along with the wine. The MV Voyager docks each day in a different part of the world which means that they do vary all of the meals each day.

Activities - There is a whole host of things to do here from aqua aerobics, water volley ball to a whole host of watersports and the team really do look after you.

Safari - We wanted a really relaxing holiday so hadn't booked our safari but decided to do this and words cannot describe how happy we are we did this. We booked through JT Safaris and I had read about them before going and was slightly sceptical that they were so good but hand on heart our experience was amazing. We were picked up from our resort and taken to the office of JT and met with Julius who asked us what we wanted......no hard sell just listened and then phoned there and then the lodges to book us in. We were then picked up by our guide Cobra who was amazing and answered any question we had and also found 4 out of the big 5 and close up with all of them. You can see their website here http://www.julius-safaris.com/ 6 out of 5 stars

Beach - the resort is right on a beautiful white sandy beach with glistening turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and the only word of advise I would give is that you should be prepared to be pestered as soon as you step on it by the beach sellers. Here you will meet people like Christopher Columbus, 007, Ken from Kenya but be prepared to let them know you want to be left alone otherwise you will be escorted on your nice beach stroll.

Service - The staff here work so hard and I must make a special mention to the following people who I felt went past the call of duty and really made our holiday. Margaret and cecelia and Nixon who never stopped smiling the whole 2 weeks.

Overall we had an amazing time and would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: I wouldn't upgrade as the rooms are all the same and you can see the sea from most of them.

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We have just returned from the best All-Inclusive resort we have ever stayed at. The Voyager is certainly all "ship-shaped and Bristol fashioned" in its organisation and presentation and delivery of a wonderful holiday experience.
The theme of being on board a ship is carried off beautifully by much attention to detail eg you are called a passenger, there are canopies over the bars that are made of sails, and the staff are all in ranks according to a maritime theme. The "docking" each day at a different "port" sets the theme for the evening meal and the staff costumes in the restaurant. The food was really good. We love different sorts of food, and the buffet system allows you to try out new things without waste. The restaurant staff were easy to chat to.
All of the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful - from the top "officers" all the way down. The gardening staff were very cheerful and skilful - have you ever tried shimming up a palm in bare feet with nothing except a circle of tough string to help? It looks easy but isn't. We loved the attention to detail with flowers and palm fronds as decoration around the place. We could communicate easily with one gardener who was deaf & dumb, but who had a ready smile and was happy to understand our various attempts to "talk" in gesticulations.
The activities & facilities were good, and you could do as much or as little as you liked without pressure.
Nothing was too much trouble. On arival we had a problem with the safe in our room - it was completely replaced within half an hour. We fed back in a questionnaire a minor irritation - and were quite shocked to find it taken seriously by Margaret, the truly professional Guest Relations Officer, who took up the matter and helped us talk it through with the relevant managers. What a well organised & caring resort!
Overall, a great relaxing holiday, we were well fed and "watered" and have returned to the crazy UK refreshed and renewed.

“Wonderful holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Just returned from a two week holiday at the Voyager Beach Resort in Jan 2012. Totally enjoyed the hotel and the holiday. The hotel is set on a cliff edge leading down to the beach. The main building including the restaurants is located at the top with paths and steps leading down past a fun pool to the beach front. At the beach front is a quiet pool where no children are allowed. There is also a third large pool near the main building. All the pools have plenty of sun beds and if you can't find one the staff will bring one to you. The three separate pools meant that there was something for everyone. All the staff were very friendly. The food was excellent for an all inclusive. The main restaurant is the usual help yourself buffet but has a different theme each night depending on where the hotel has 'docked' that day. There is also an Italian restaurant which is included in the all inclusive and a sea food restaurant where you pay 50%. My partner is vegetarian and this hotel had the best selection for her we have found on any all inclusive.
The beach is public and you do get approached by the sellers whenever you walk on to it - but they are not aggressive and a firm 'no' usually worked. The sea has a large tide - when the tide is low it does leave rocks and seaweed exposed but when it is high the beach looks excellent.
A couple of negatives - some of the rooms are small. We booked a superior sea view room which did have a brilliant view but was smaller than other rooms on the site. If you have mobility problems the number of steps you walk up and down would mean this is not the hotel for you.
You will want to go on a Safari whilst there (just about everyone does) - Tsavo East and Tsavo West reserves are around 3 hours drive away. The Voyager Beach is close to the Niarobi/Mombasa highway so this resort is a good base for such a trip. Can I recommend JT Safaris (please see my review on their page) for four reasons 1) They are cheaper than the ones you book through your tour company 2) You get a vehicle to yourself rather than sharing one 3) The service is excellent 4) You don't have to vacate your hotel as you do if you book with a tour company
A bit of housekeeping - the flights take 9 - 9.5 hrs from Gatwick, the transfer is 40 mins but you only go around 10 miles across gridlocked Mombasa in this time
Overall - superb holiday and super hotel
