I stayed in this hotel last October for two weeks whilst on a school partnership visit.

I didn't write a review then however since looking at the recent reviews I feel it necessary to write a review now to warn people of our experience. (Which we were reassured was a one off)

The hotel is very basic (As most of the city centre hotels are) but was in an ideal location for us as it is away from the main busy areas. The staff were welcoming and very friendly to us initially and we enjoyed spending our evenings in the court yard bar area where we were able to watch the football which was being played back in England.

On the fourth day of our visit we took our money and passports out of the safe to pay for the safari we had arranged (With our trusted friend & tour guide). Following the meeting we went straight up to the room with our remaining money to sort it out for the following few days. After sorting out the money we placed it into a new security bag with the intention of returning it the cashiers desk when we went down later.

Unfortunately we forgot the security bag when we went down to dinner and left it on the bed under a huge pile of books and school documents. We were only downstairs for 20min but when we returned to the room the security bag had gone along with all of our money and credit cards. Lucky for us they left our flight tickets and passports on the bed.

When we reported to the front desk they were very dismissive of or situation, we insisted they contacted the police and our friends arrived to help us explain what had happened. We said that we were concerned that someone in the hotel was responsible as the door had been locked the whole time (and was still locked when we returned) and only our room had been entered. The staff said that this was not the case and that another hotel close by had had a similar incident the previous week and gangs were using copy keys to enter rooms.

To cut a long story short we spent several hours at the local police station (which was terrifying especially when they interviewed the five staff we had suggested could possibly be involved whilst we were in the room) filling out a police report so that we could try and claim on the insurance (Which of course we couldn't). The police officer said that there was no evidence that staff were involved and suggested it was a guest that checked in and out on the same day as we were robbed. We had no choice but to believe that and felt that in part it was our own fault for forgetting the security bag in the first place.

The hotel reassured us that they would improve security measures in the hotel and for the remainder of our stay they had security positioned on the main door and on the floor where the bedrooms are.

It is obvious from the recent reviews that this is no longer in place and I am now convinced that our robbery was not the first and sadly for others not the last. I have no faith in the honesty of some of the staff and management.

Kenys is a wonderful country to visit so please don't be put off by this review. We have been back already since of visit last October (and I can't believe I am saying this now but we stayed at the Lotus for 2 nights) and are planning to visit again next year. We just won't be choosing this hotel EVER again.

The hotel is nothing spectacular, but the rooms are clean and quiet. The restaurant is good, but the breakfast is nothing special. During ramadan you may be woken by the mosque located across the street.

The staff was very friendly. The amenities were great!!. It was very clean. The location is great!! Its right in the heart of Mombasa and close to the historical landmark Fort Jesus. I will definitely stay there again the next time I'm in town.

I stayed in this hotel in May 2010 for few nights. Hotel was clean and quiet, mosquito nets were in good shape. The staff were very nice! Only negative thing was laundry service which was slow and we had to wait our laundries longer than expected. But we got them juts in time before leaving from Mombasa. But nice hotel and good food! I would go there again.
