Well, my friend and I paid very good money to go to the Intrepids safari camp in the Masai Mara. We arrived in the late morning and had a late afternoon game drive before dinner in the evening. That night the menu had Kingfish and Lamb on the menu; I ordered the lamb and my friend ordered the Kingfish.
After dinner we retired to our tent and about an hour later he started to have stomach cramps and began to throw up violently. He was up all night being sick and in the early morning hours I was concerned and went to get help from the doctor in the camp. When the doctor arrived my friend could barely speak and could not get out of bed. I consulted with the doctor who gave him an anti nausea injection and started a course of anti biotics. In private I asked the doctor if he felt it was food poisoning and he said YES.
Fish food poisoning comes on very fast and strong, but also goes away quickly with treatment, so there was nothing else we could do at that time and my friend lay in pain in bed and had to wait it out.
I went to management at the lodge and had a somewhat furious conversation with the chief manager, Edwin. He already tried to start the cover up and said there was no way it could be food poisoning because that would take up to 12 hours to set in. Ridiculous. We called in the doctor who contradicted him and said 1-3 hours for food poisoning.
In the afternoon my friend told me to go out on the game drive because there was nothing more I could do at that time. While I was away the manager went to the tent and unbeknownst to me, had a letter in hand which he asked my friend to sign. In that letter it stated that my friend had diarrhea the day before he came to the lodge (untrue), and that while at the lodge it had escalated into his current condition. My friend, who could not even raise his head off of a pillow and was woozy from being sick and being treated, signed the document. I did not find out about this until the next day when the document was brought to us at check out.
unbelievable. What kind of underhanded sneaky management asks a very sick person to sign something like that!!! This was a total cover up, I asked for the fish to take it to the labs in Mombasa but was told that the fish had been finished the night previous.
In the end we were offered a 30 dollar rebate on our 800 euro stay at this lodge and that was the compensation for poisoning one of our party! unreal. My friend and I had been together for every meal for three weeks, and I had not been sick at all and neither had he, until that meal at Intrepids.
unbelieveably, someone at the lodge left the health and safety report for Dec 2011 sitting around the public computer at the lodge. It was a multi page document and I couldn't believe it was just sitting there. So I opened it up and began to read. In the middle of the document was the stated statistics of health issues in Dec, and there were 9 cases of gastro enteritis! 9?!!! in a month?
I will never, ever stay at an Intrepids lodge again and found that the treatment and sneaky underhanded liability document signing asked while a sick man could not get out of bed was far far far from any kind of five star safari lodge that I have ever been to. In the 11 years I have been working and traveling in east Africa I have never witnessed such irresponsible behaviour at what is supposed to be a five star establishment. And the fact that a mere 30 dollars was the offer of compensation was more of an insult than anything else. Beware....
